  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
Ok, whiled stripping the Varnish on my railings I hit the chrome plated brass/bronze fittings with the sander and said "That Looks Good". Since the fitting on my 73/53MY are Chrome plated brass and are in deplorable condition I decided to work on two fittings on one stancion and see how it looks.
IMO it looks great.

There are two problems 1. how to get the pitted chrome plating off, without taking the railings apart. 2. How to protect the Brass/Bronze fittings once cleaned ??

Ive tried a burnishing wheel , wire wheel and sanding disc all of which work to some degree but are incredibly labor intensive.

HELP

My one and only experience was with the railing off. Kind of suprised at the precision fit, but came off without a lot of problems. My memory says the railing would have to be at least loose enough to work off the chrome cap. Good luck.

Heat the cap and remove the screws. The heat will soften the 5200 that is gobbed in there. Then it will pull off.

Try Corrosion-X, which seems to protect bronze and brass fittings admirably. Available on line. I hve had really good luck with it on through-hulls, strainers, etc. No green stuff on them.

Or pull them off and have them rechromed. I was surprised at how reasonable it is to have chroming work done. My spotlight came in at just over $200 and I just had the rims off of my wifes Jetta TDI chromed for about $500.

He Sky...Sell the TDI Jetta and get your wife a Volt. My wife likes hers so much that I never get to drive it. It is an awewsome car and burns no gas on most days. When it goes beyond 50 miles after a charge, it still gets 44 mpg. GM finally got something right.

I really like the look of the natural Bronze fitting with the stainless pipe. The big problem will be keeping the Bronze from tarnishing. Several antique saleboat sites have suggested a two part Acrillic Urethane Clear Coat . They claim it lasts about 2-3 years and is easy to remove and reapply.

Are the Stancions attached with screw or thru bolted???

Maynard, Maynard, Maynard. You just don't get it. I will NEVER buy an Obama Motors product. The shareholders and the bondholders got screwed and Unions won. Our tax dollars are now paying bonuses to union workers instead of paying those who originally took the risk by buying into GM.

And....My Jetta TDI cost half of what the Volt cost, it gets over 50mph on the highway, and it has no lithium ion batteries to catch fire in a crash.

But I'm glad you like it. At the rate they're selling it should be a collectors item very soon.

I think he is trying to get some more sold so his has some value later on. Rare cars can be valuable but when it was a flop and no one wants them they don't fetch much.

yry power coat, they have all kind of colors.

Aw c'mon Sky... GM is trying. I know lots of folks that work there and they are good people. I do agree that things would have been much better if Obama had kept his nose out, but, oh well, next year is our chance for revenge. As far as the Volt , it cost me $37,300 including taxes and plates. This also included my $7,500 rebate. I KNOW that your Jetta TDI cost nearly the same. Regarding the low sales volume, they have sold everyone that they have built, and except for the demonstrators, all Volts were ordered and most buyers have had to wait for several months. They are ramping production up as fast as they can. None have ever sat on a dealer's lot. So, if lack of Volts is an issue, blame GM, not the buyers. We burn about 3 gallons of gas per month. My lawn mower burns more than that. It really is an awesome car and shows how us Americans can do something correctly when we put our minds to it. The money I spent stayed in the US also, not Germany.

Jettas are assembled in Chatanooga and the TDI is about $24000. One of the Volts caught fire recently after a test crash. I surely would not want to be anywhere near a lithium fire. It's almost impossible to put them out.

But, as I said before, I'm glad you like it. I guess I'll have to buy some DTE stock since you are now using more electric than gas. :)

How about a used Yugo?? They get great gas mileage, oh I forgot their life expectancy was less than a year.

Do I understand that this transportation miracle is $44,800.00 and you're saying the TDI costs nearly the same?

If that's the case I've finally figured out why people buy hybrids and volts. They don't understand physics and they can't do math.

How about a used Yugo?? They get great gas mileage, oh I forgot there arn't any used Yugos because their life expectancy was less than a year. Back in late 80's when everyone in Texas , including us , went broke the only thing we had left was our lake house which was 120 round trip commute from Dallas. I sent Charm out to get a used Honda or something that got better mileage than my Caddy, she came home with a Yugo. I said what the H-- is a Yugo, she replied I don't know but it was 5,000 new and has a warranty. Argueably the worst car ever made she loved that POS and drove it for 6 years, go figure.

Well, the Volt is an awesome car and they were wrong about the fire's cause. Isn't it amasing how fast seemingly bad news travels? Newt Gingrich is still having to eat his 2nd. wife mistakes. Ity seems that all we look for today is faults, then magnify them.

EV's and Hybrids are on the way out. The new little turbo gas and diesel engines get comparable mileage at lower initial cost and with less maintenance down the road. People are beginning to see this. I doubt we'll see many new EV's and Hybrids in the years to come especially if there are no government incentives.
