Hatteras Model
40' DOUBLE CABIN-Series I (1986 - 1989)
So, what is the good, bad and the ugly....

Noel

yes, but what should we look for? I know of a few minor leaks... major items please. Might be a good move for the family... Has heat installed already...

Some tips:
-You'll want stabilizers.
-Healthy, watered batteries make a happy boat.

The Bad:
-Check the dinette windows, aft salon aft windows, flybridge fore of the hatch, where the bow pulpit meets the bow, where the stanchions meet the deck for water intrusion. The core repair is $$$$$.
-Head room could be a bit better if your 6'7"s or higher!
-You're not gonna' win any drag races.
-The twice annual rub out and polish is a week project.
-the hull is wet, anything over 1.5 feet will be on the windshield without spray rails.
-you need tab extensions (Sky - any notice of improvements yet?)

The Good:
-Fuel efficient (in my mind).
-Your gonna' love the room!
-Aft salon (if enclosed) is awesome!
-Bridge is awesome.
-keel - protects the running gear and gives you strong tracking around the docks in a breeze.
-the weight gives you a Cadillac ride - nice and soft
-its built like a tank - your repair dollars are well protected
-Its a Hatt and you have this group!

That's 6 bad's and 8 good's - go buy the boat!

Is this a general question, or do you have one you're looking to buy and want to know about the problems to look for.

1. Does the boat have DD's , since these are not go fast boats having DD naturals is a plus IMO. Sound running gear should be a must.
2. IMO you do not want to buy a " fixer-upper". I assume your not looking at a 76 because your made of money and these boats will suck you dry if they need alot of work and you can't do all or most of it.
3. They boat are well built and I have a 73MY that I've put over 8,000 miles on in less than 3 years with nothing major going wrong with the boat that I didn't know about when I bought it.
4. They give you alot of bang for your buck and are one of the most confortable 53 ft boats ever made.
5. It is not impossible to get insurance on them, but you do pay a slight premium due to their age.
6. If you want economy these boats are not for you, unless you think a 1mpg is economical. The cost of fuel these days cause most of us to travel at Hull speed and there are alot of trawlers out there that get much better fuel economy.

IMO, a well cared for 53 is still one of the best looking Motor Yachts ever made.

I have one from a friend here. Good live aboard I believe... Looking for where to look :D

We like it, running numbers now too...

Noel,

Considering that you live on a 40 Hatt MY now, you will be thrilled with all the space. As we discussed earlier today, I will head over in a couple of weeks when my girls (daughter and 2 granddaughters) go back to San Diego. From what you told me incl price, it should be a great livaboard for you guys. I am not crazy about the 903 Cummins engines, but you can live with them.

Real heavy tank....rock solid.....but 25% more dockage costs than your current boat and probably 35% or so more heating and cooling costs.

Galley down & dinette opposite: a matter of personal taste...but if you like to eat out back, that's a long walk with steep steps in between.,,,, Cozy in the winter in NY.

Good market for purchasing a larger more expensive boat.

I ,don't think any 53MY's came with 903's. They are probably VT370M's.

Spoke with the owner... 8v???? turbos
