70's music...

Don't they use that to help people who can't get to sleep? Works well for me. :)

But seriously, look at any "surveys" of the best rock songs - the majority will be from the 50's/60's. There will be few from the 70's. It had all already been done.

"Surveys" about rock music are about as useful as polls for politics. The biggest obstacle is defining rock music. I'm sure I could come up with a top 100 which would consist primarily of 70's music, and I have little doubt you could come up with another to show most would be in the 60's.

Difference is, I would be right, and you would be wrong. :D

Sorry,I just have to step in here. This discussion depends totally on one's definition of music. If one means noise, which may or may not rime, I suppose any of the crap which has been recorded since about '69 might be called music. If you mean something which touches the soul, has a beat to dance to,when you can actually understand the words and has and will stand the test of time you need to go back to Little Anthony,The Platters, and even The Mills Brothers or The Ink Spots. Although, I was not around in their hayday,It's clear they all meet the above criteria as attested to by my 7 yearold. Nothing plays on the boat before Janice and damn little of her contemories. Funny,I don't feel old.

Hear that Bob? Maybe you're not the oldest fart on here after all. :D

Sorry...what were we talking about again? Hell, I enjoyed the 70's so much I spent 18 years there.

BTW, I haven't heard my favorite band mentioned even once in this thread. I seem to recall the Eagles writing some pretty good stuff in the 70's.

Then there are Jackson Browne, Aztec Two Step, Arlo, Billy Joel, Jim Croce, Harry Chapin, Elton John, cripes, I even like John Denver - at least he played guitar better than he flew...

I seem to associate disco with the 80's, when musical life as we knew it ceased.

"Maybe you're not the oldest fart on here after all"

I'm not sure it's really related to age. Certainly it starts out by hearing whatever is popular at the time so for someone who is 10 years old right now, he/she is primarily exposed to what is on the media at the moment. So I agree that probably we all tend to like stuff we were brought up with but as we get older, that can change.

I wasn't around when the Mills Brothers were recording but in the mid 80's I heard a recording of their "hits" and discovered they were great. IMO a song like "Paper Doll" is just superb - both from a tune/harmony and "words" point of view.

My son is now a confirmed Beatles freak though he was not alive when they broke up. I was talking to him on the phone a while back and I heard "Day Tripper" playing in the background. I asked him why he had a Beatle song playing and his response was, "Dad, those guys were unbelievable."

My 19 year old niece has, for some reason, taken a big shine to the Lovin Spoonfull. "Summer in the City" is playing almost any time I talk to her. THough last week she was raving about the Rolling Stones' "This Could Be the Last Time." He younger sister loves to watch old Hollywood musicals and she can sing along with all the songs from "Singing in the Rain."

So I think once someone is exposed to a broader range of music than whatever they heard as a youngster, they often end up with a much wider range of "likes." Heck, I can be in moods for just about anything from Bach to current pop...even some '70s stuff. :)

But I will admit I'm very much a melody/harmony guy and I subscribe to the old saying that if you can't whistle or hum it, it won't last.

What's all this about old f*rts. There are only two of us on here and the other one is getting his life sustaining machinery (oops, electronic gadget) tuned up as we speak.

The best music hasn't even been mentioned here. Mozart, Beethoven, Albinoni etc wrote music that remains popular after hundreds of years. Almost everyone still enjoys the 50's music. My kids and grand kids do too! You could actually understand the words. Some good stuff came out of the 60's and 70's of course, but the closer you get to today, the more the screaming idiots rely on noise, volume and four letter words. That's music???????

OK, fire away, I've had a nice Manhattan with Turkey 101 and don't give a ......

You're not wrong about the music, but I'm going to hammer you for your signature;

Please call it a "transmission". In today's language "tranny" means something completely different. Of course, it is possible that you're aware of that and in fact actually are waiting for a tranny.... not that there's anything wrong with that!

Maybe a pictorial representation will help.

ROFLMAO!

Thanks for the visual aids Sky.

While we're on the topic.... let's all remember to type "fridge" when using shorthand for refrigerator.

Many people type "frig" which means something completely different and probably violates some forum guidelines as well.

I have learned how to cut and paste very well, huh?

You know, if their fridge is not working they may want to call it a friggin fridge and that could be the reason for the newly shortened version. Either that or they don't know how to spell.

Ok so I guess itslike beauty in the eye or ear of the beholder but I didn't see anyone defending DISCO.

Sounds like that boys been to a rage or two. Some of the speed metal is good but it gets tired pretty quick. Seems to fit the video a bit although I would have used some more fast paced action scenes to go with System of the Down or Rob Zombie.

Ok, now that you kids have had at it. with all the talk about 60,70, 80's and newer music, seems like you all forgot where it started. Somewhere in the early to mid 50's when my parents said the stuff we were listening to was junk. There were musicians, like Carl Perkins, Little Richard, Chuck Barry, and even ole Elvis, playing what was called rock n roll. As I recall that's when it all kind of got started. Every generation since has had it's share of great music, as well as some junk. Who is to define what is good or bad, it's all in what you like. I like the big band era, and a lot of new stuff as well. As for who was or is the best, depends on how high you can count, the list is endless. As for pure entertainers, Sammy Davis Jr. was probably the most talented of them all.

The music will always be there, enjoy what you like.

Or listen the Chaconne from Bach's D minor partita and wonder if music hasn't been going downhill since the 1720's.

As noted, it's all about personal taste - heck, I even know people who like Justin Bieber. OK, I don't actually KNOW anybody who likes him but I've heard that such people exist. ;)

Good thread, great wit; Sky, you are one in a million! Randy, you're two in a million, or whatever comes next. I used listen to classical stuff on NPR and swear to God that that it's calming effect kept me from having to do great bodily harm to various and sundry folk encountered throughout the day. Now it's bluegrass/southern gospel/"Oh Brother,Where art Thou?" kind of stuff. My favorite CD is a Hank Williams Sr gospel favorites thing, somewhat simplistic and that may be it's appeal. The Admiral got us tickets for "The Million Dollar Quartet" in Chicago last month, very fun and cool and entertaining. Still love later Beatles, Elton John, John Denver. Each to his own, I guess. TRANSMISSION TRANSMISSION TRANSMISSION!

You guys are beautiful. Best laugh Gayle and I have had in a long time. I never would have related the trawlerites nickname for a transmission to a transvestite. Let's see, what else has changed.... in 1950 a 'fag' was a cigarette.

Bob
Still waiting for a TRANSMISSION
