Yesterday, in San Miguel de Allende, we were at a little shop. In the back was an old GE fridge like this one (this is a pic from the internet but it is the exact same model) http://susanthegreat.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/1934-ge-fridge-small.jpg

It was working just fine, keeping bottled water and cokes good and cold. My wife, who speaks spanish quite well, asked (at my request) if it had ever been repaired. The answer was, "No, my grandparents bought it and it has been here since the 1930's."

I wonder if any fridge made today will still be working in 70 years? The new one installed in our boat by the PO in 1997 failed in 2005!

I don't think most of us have the same mind set. My fridge (in the house) is about 25 yrs old, works perfectly, I have no problems and its never been serviced; yet visitors, ex-wives and gf's have told me numerous times to get a new one. Why I ask, isn't your beer/wine cold enuff??
(my preference has been to get a new gf, wife [although more expensive] or friend...lol)

even though fridges are an intersting topic for 53MY owners... more marine related as Air Cons. There are still a few vintage 70s blue paint cruisair workign yet the newer stuff doesn't seem to last more than 10 years...

if it ain't broken, dont fix it!

FWIW Our 1968 38DC still has the original Sub Zero. No sign of it quitting anytime soon. Could probably use a new door gasket, but otherwise no problems.

I am curious..do you guys with the 30+ year old reefers leave them on all the time, or do you shut them off when the boat is not being used?

Our 1967 34c had the original unit in it when we sold her last year, works perfectly and after talking to new owner a couple of weeks ago there are no plans to replace it.

Wonder what that unit uses for referigerant? Think some old systems were Amonia.

So I loaded it up and hauled it away, over to my house. It is out in the garage keeping things at 20 below right now. I painted it Hatteras Off-White and put a new power cord on it a few years ago but still cranking along just fine.

I wonder if the old girlfriend is still working as good....

Cute and funny above! My old Frigidaire (GM) Freezer/Fridge on the boat, still keeps cold, although I had to have a control relay replaced a few years ago.

When I took the original GE fridge out of my Hatteras it worked fine. (this was to change things around and get some more storage space, see below) It would probably still be working if I hadn't removed it.

My original 1965, chocolate brown Frigidaire (and matching Princess stove/oven) is still working great on my 41. The old blue Cruiseair is doing it's thing too, even though Krush worked on it last summer.

I'm going to vote with the "they don't make 'em like they used to" crowd. My old blue-gray CruisAir condensing units are still marching along like a best friend, one with new air handlers, but the third condensing unit that had already been replaced when I bought the boat 4 1/2 years ago...well....I've replaced that one twice already, and something tells me I'm going to get the pleasure of doing it again.

I was at a "supper club" in Northern Wisconsin and the art deco bar had the same orange neon lights from the 1930's when the bar was new... The bar had never been fixed, repaired, or in need of work of any kind.
