  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
36' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1969 -1977)
Considering buying "No Hurry's" 1989 Cummins 6BTA's to replace the gassers in my 36c.....but they have over 3000 hours on them. Thinking they will most likely need a rebuild and horsepower bump before installed. Called 3 Cummins dealers today to get an idea on MOH cost and all 3 were clueless!
Anybody here have a ballpark cost on a rebuild per engine?
Thx

He can tell you if increasing the HP is feasible and what the cost of a MOH might be. 3000 hours may be nothing for those engines if they've been cared for.

I the fuel pump can be re calibrated to the 370 HP rating and the turbos should be the same.Pistons and other parts will need to replaced anyway so getting the higher HP ones will not be a big cost difference. I know the higher HP versions require a lot more changes. PM me if you need to have them done.

What Jack said Spot on ;)

Also 3000 hrs If propped right Not a lot of hrs! I would do aftercooler, Transcooler, Tonys new pumps, and any other upgrades in Tony's Tips and put them in unless you feel the need for more speed :)

Agree, 3000 hours on those engines is just broken in assuming they're set up and cared for correctly. Bumping a 250 up to a 370 would be about impossible for any reasonable price. It's not just recalibration, for one thing they use a completely different aftercooler which will cost a bunch to replace. And knowing Cummins the block is probably different too. As good as the B-Series is Cummins is still in the habit of never building two engines alike. However you could squeeze another 25 ponies out of them with a re-calibration.

On the positive side. I have twin 260 HP 3208 CATs in my 36C and it will do 27 kts in the corner. Granted, she's light right now, but running on the governor. The only problem is that there's not a lot of reserve if you're going to load her heavy and buck the wind and tide. No Hurry said they're still in the boat right? So you can demo them and see if the performance is satisfactory.

If I remember correctly, the 250HP B series were bumped up to 300HP and had problems. Cummins then redesigned a lot of the parts to get more HP out of them. I believe the crankshaft is different among other major components. It all depends on what engines they are and at what duty rating.

Where are you located? If in the mid-Atlantic, call T&S Marine Engines in Crisfield, MD. They sell and overhaul Cummins diesels.

I don't think you can increase the hp very much in those engines- 280 or so would be about it. I think they have a different FI system as well as crank and head. The B series Cummins has been through a lot of evolution to get to its current power rating. The final mechanical FI engines were up to over 370, I think. The common-rail versions are up at 500 hp- a lot to squeeze out of less than six liters even with CR injection and EM systems.
