Just an update as to the starboard engine. Turns out it had a cracked liner which had nothing to do with the blown oil line. It is currently being totally rebuilt and should be completed in early November.

I notice you said November but of what year :D ????????????

You've been watching too many Obama infomercials. :D

I see our stimulus money is being put to good use. A bird in every pot. Two Detroits in every yacht. I love this country. :)

The only catch is that I have to take it to Kenya for warranty work.

Randy, please forgive my ignorance, is Freebird stabilized?

No. Have you read his posts? Of course he is medicated.

Thank you for a prompt reply Randy, we are looking for 50-58 MY, CPMY or YF, have substantial down or will do all cash on the right vessel. I have very limited power boat experience, but in my novice opinion and with our future plans, I think that Naiads are required. The damn things are 30k to install. I will keep monitoring you progress on getting Freebird back up on both legs and in time, if no one else steps up we might be able to strike a deal. I just need to keep the cost of stabilizers on the table. Best of luck on the rebuild.

Where are you getting new stabilizers installed for 30 grand? The best prices I've heard is way higher.

Walt

Me too. More like 40-60k.

Guys, I've got to fess up, I obviously don't know diddly squat about Hatties (and power boats in general), but I really wanna learn. A broker on the West Coast told me about $30k Naiads and I bought it.

We've logged close to 20k miles under sail, but my power boat experience is limited to about a half a dozen 60-80 mile daytime runs.

On one of those runs from Marina Del Rey to Isthmus on Catalina aboard a mid 90's Chinese made 50', we lost the stabilizers about 10 miles from Catalina. She laid down on starboard side, hesitated (it seemed like forever) and to this day I still don't know what brought her back up. We were up on a bridge and I ran down to salon to find the owner and his 2 buddy's playing gin all jammed into the couch by a huge marble table. By the time I got the table off of them she leveled out.

I guess loosing control of the Naiads under way can be have instant dramatic consequences. The weather was beyond beautiful, no wind and about 1,5 to 2' running swell. Once we lost the "gonads" we had to go up @90 degrees to these tiny little waves and then come back down taking them on the port quarter. The last 10 miles took forever to cover with white knuckles the rest of the way. There was just no way to take those baby waves broadside on that boat.

As you can probably tell it was a traumatic experience. I learned to sail in Molokai Channel and can effectively manage over 25' swell, but without a ballast 7' under, that Chinese "junk" scared us to the point of me and the Captain (another true ragabagger) talking the rest of the ride about designing "ammas" like on an outrigger canoe for Joey's boat. Sure they wouldn't be aesthetically pleasing, but they would be less susceptible to malfunction lol.

This is the reason i am looking for a stabilized (or preferably "ammad" lol) Hattie.

Am I the only person to have this happen to, or is this a frequent event?
I think Hargave designs are beautiful, but with good sea running, in my novice opinion, Naiads would make a huge difference in the ride comfort. Gee I hate to sound like a commercial. Can some of you please advise me if I am on the right track here?

Are you sure they were Naiads? It sounds more like what happens to the Wilcox stabs when one of the control boards goes bad.

I don't know if they were Naiads or Wilcox or? This was about 15 yrs ago. I'll try to contact the Captain to get the name of the "gonads" manufacturer and the basic boat specs.

I apologize to all the Hatty's and should refrain from late night posts in the future lol.

What's a Hattie?

Reminds me of my ex-step son from 20 years ago... we were at a hot rod show and there was this sharp older 'Vette that the 10 year old called a "Corie" trying to sound cool. Boy did I ever spank his PeePee over that one!! ws

Relax Bill, happy Sunday.... you sound like the type of father we all wish we had lol.

By the way have you got any more pics of the Freebird than Randy has put out?

Boy oh boy!! Sure do... and he hates it when I post them too!! Gotta pay some bills first, then dig around the archives for a bit!! ws

I don't mind when you post pictures as I put that custom interior out of my misery a long time ago. Needless to say, stabilizers weren't on my shopping list when I bought this boat as I planned to use it on the river.

I'm sorry, but in my limited experience in running stabilized boats, I really couldn't feel that much difference while underway. Maybe I just didn't hit the right combination of water and course to appreciate them, plus the boats I've run were wider than mine.

Plans to stop by the boat en route to FL last week didn't work out, but I'll be down there this week-end. I don't expect to see any progress made on the rebuild. Maybe I just too damn patient and understanding for my own good.

Well, I'm back in divorce mode again, and I think this one it going to take. I'm still looking for offers and/or trades for a motorhome or travel trailer. Outside of that, drastic times call for drastic measures. If some of you rich boys want to buy me out, I'll leave the HOF after these boats are gone. :D
