Ah Hah!!! I found the answer to my question, after I read the link for the pump below. The description says "...The pump motor is permanently sealed in nontoxic lubricant for years of reliable running. Can be submerged. " So the nontoxic lubricant is now dumped on the pump platform. I guess 'permanent' is a relative term, since the motor came out of the housing!

Update: Reached the mfgr of the pump. They say the pump is a 'press fit' of the motor into the housing. But I notice that they have modified the mounting design so that the motor and housing are more secure. Also, the oil/grease is a 10wgt dielectric (non-conducting). They do not offer rebuild services, but only a 2 year replacement warranty. Says a local motor shop should be able to service it and should have access to the oil.

End of post note.

I have a Cal brand AC system water pump, which after a rough sea ride and oddly enough, a day later, jumped out of its stainless steel casing with a 'bang', while we were sitting at the dock, with the pump running. The bang was from the pump and motor jumping out of the casing and hitting against the bulkhead in the ER, where it continued to sit, while running. The pump and motor were still operational and running, but the motor was being held in position against the bulkhead by the heavy duty green stripe attaching it to the through-hull/strainer.

I have linked to the style of pump for descriptive purposes.

I had replaced the AC pump in 1998, after the original March pump burned up. I hate plastic stuff, so I went with the Cal SS and Bronze unit. I has run well since.

So, sorry for so long to get to the point. When I started to inspect the pump, I found the wooden platform where it was mounted adjacent to the bulkhead was covered with about 1/4" of a light grey, lightweight grease type substance, almost like Grey Poupon(?). The total area covered is about 1' x 2', again about 1/8"-1/4" deep and fairly uniformly distributed. I can see some light splash of this substance up on the Genny and a little on the bulkhead.

So what is this stuff and were did it come from? Does Cal have the motor of the pump sitting in this grease as a bath in the pump housing, which is a hollow Stainless Steel shell? Or is it just from my rough ride, when I pitched down heavily and all the bilge water ran toward the bow. Maybe a lot of surface material on top of the bilge water ran up there. But this stuff is not oily or black like what sits in the bilge, before absorbed by the sausages. Also, this grey greasy stuff sits all around where the AC water pump is mounted and is found nowhere else.

So this is a squirrelly question, but I am stumped as to what this stuff is and where it came from. Could it have been dumped out of the A/C heads (never head of such a thing).

At any rate, I think I'll contact Cal and see if they can re-mount the motor in the housing. Why or how it came out, that I don't know either.

Oh, well, comment away. I am open to any thoughts on this.

Sounds like what oil/water mixed together look and feel like. Any chance it is the results of oil and water puddling together? Maybe in a low spot? Just a thought.

The oil is gray to light gray and is the consistency is between 90wgt oil and mustard! ergo, Gray Poupon Grease. So maybe it changes consistency in the presence of air and water. Can't say. Forgot (getting worse, as getting older?) to bring pump back from boat (took it off and bagged it), so over Thanksgiving, will bring it back and take to a small-motor shop.
