Just think of all the money O'bama is speeding on flying the jet some where everyday.

Spreading the wealth....Yea right. Free internet access next and the computer to go with it. Just doing the 'right' thing to get their votes instead of what's best for the country.

Free phones, a non-necessity, while our troops are waiting for support.

Only in this America...

Vote 'em out!

Here's the "catch"

I dove into the application page in the link above. Oh brother.
This was presented without irony of any kind as "requirements" for the free phone program.

You qualify for Lifeline Service in your area if...

1.You already participate in one of the following assistance programs:

•Federal Public Housing Assistance / Section 8
•Food Stamps
•Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
•Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
•National School Lunch (free program only)
•Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
•Medicaid
2.No one in your household currently receives Lifeline Assistance through another phone carrier. If someone in your household is receiving Lifeline Assistance you must cancel the service before applying for Lifeline Service through SafeLink Wireless.

3.You have a valid United States Postal Address. In order for us to ship you your FREE phone you must live at a residence that can receive mail from the US Post Office. Sorry, but P.O. Boxes cannot be accepted.

Those PO Boxes are awfully cramped quarters for sleeping...do they deliver to cardboard boxes?

Lifeline Benefits

Lifeline Assistance is part of a program that was created by the government to provide discounted or free telephone service to income-eligible consumers. To help bring you this important benefit, SafeLink Wireless is proud to offer Lifeline Service. Through our Lifeline Service you will receive FREE cellular service, a FREE cell phone, and FREE Minutes every month! SafeLink Wireless Service does not cost anything – there are no contracts, no recurring fees and no monthly charges.

Any Minutes you do not use will roll-over. Features such as caller ID, call waiting and voicemail are all also included with your service. If you need additional Minutes, you can buy TracFone Airtime Cards at any TracFone retailer Walmart, Walgreens, Family Dollar, etc). SafeLink Airtime Cards will be available soon.

It would be interesting to see if Motorola contributed to the Obama campaign. Outside that, why would "Lifeline Assistance" need anything more than the ability to call 911 and the local employment office? I'm sure all phones have caller ID ability, but that struck me as odd. Almost as odd as allowing the rollover minutes and voicemail. There has to be a Blackberry joke in this someplace, but it's just hard to think of any of this as being funny.

you mean crackberry? If you thought the phone was addictive see what the stuff you sell on the free phone is like.
