Hatteras Model

I'm going down there for a week in April (flying down). I have never been before. Has anyone been down there? Looking for suggestions for eats, drinks, snorkel, bonefish, etc.....

Thanks!

Been going to Provo for 10 years. Best kept secret in the Caribbean. Many changes as they have been "progressing" but its still a great place. You can't go wrong with the food, just ask other tourists with tan's (they've been there a while and will have feedback). Hit the Golf Club on Thursday evening for the lobster specials. Drive out to Da Chonk Shack (lunch in the Blue Hills area). Other favorites - Magnolia's (over looking Turtle Cove Marina), Hemmingways (lunch). You can't go wrong. Never bonefished, but the scuba can't be beat. If you have a choice get on a boat that is heading to the South side of the island for diving. Favorite dive sites are Sanborne Channel, G-Spot (many sites in those areas). Skip the cattle car operators and get on a limited boat (Big Blue is one that I have used exclusively, but ill be checking another operator out this year due to their prices). Grace Bay is THE beach. skip the high priced hotels and stay at either Sands or Ocean Reef (free nights). You'll love it. Warning - its not cheap, but you get what you pay for... Other Q's???

Haven't been for a few years and hear there are substantial changes, but the main reason we went was for the diving. We dove many places from Bonaire, the Cayman's (including Bloody Bay Wall etc), Bahamas, etc but the Turks still remains our favorite by far. Don't have my dive log book with me for dive sites but clearly northwest point (e.g. Shark Hotel) sticks in my mind along with West Caicos island. Most of the diving is wall diving with pristine dive sites, platelett coral galore, huge dramatic drop offs, etc. The main advantage of the Turks is the fact that anything can appear at anytime. This was where I had my first dive with a 40ft humpback around 12 years ago. Caribbean reef sharks are common, as are eagle rays. Alicia shot some excellent Hi8 footage of a good size eagle ray that buzzed us for a couple of minutes. Back then we dove with Art Pickering's operation as you could dive your own profile, no follow the leader type diving unless you wanted that. We did a couple of trips with Beaches (great promo deals!!) but still dove with Pickering as Beaches insisted on follow the divemaster type of diving, which makes it hard to film.

One of the main drawbacks when we were going, was the horrible service we had in restaurants. After a few trips, we started renting efficiencies and shipped in our own food (eggbeaters for breakfast, steaks, chicken, etc) and preparing our own meals. I remember one time after an afternoon dive we came back for an early dinner, I believe it was the main restaurant at the Turtle Cove Inn. We were really tired, hungry and thirsty. The place had 2 waitresses standing off in the distance, we were the only two people in the place and weren't waited on for 20 minutes, and another 10 minutes to get a drink, another hour for food etc. Hopefully that has changed, but it was so rampant back then we started preparing all of our own meals.

Have been going down to Provo (fishing) for years. It has been "discovered" to say the least. Many resturants of all price ranges, some very good some very average. Suggest you find Art Pickering walking the docks at Turtle Cove Marina around cocktail hour wine glass in hand with his dog (Jack Russell) and explain your diving or fishing desires. He sold his business a few years ago but still is the man with info on who, what, and where. You can also go to the marina office and ask for Carol for Art's phone # or who she would suggest. Tell Carol or Art "Spellbound" (Toby) said hello and will see them early June .

That said there is a very nice snorkling reef just outside the entrance to Turtle Cove that is accessible by beach. It is inside the Marine Park and usually has a nice assortment of marine life. Da Conch Shack is a must. Island is very user friendly and fun to explore to "backside" with a rental car. Grace Bay is very developed but still beautiful if not charming like it was. Enjoy and have fun.
