  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
36' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1969 -1977)
I'm getting very impatient with the lack of interest any yards here in NW Ohio have in my wish to repower with diesels! I'm thinking about reman Cummins due strictly to available funds.
I have found a place that is interested and that I trust to possibly do the work, but they have no info on where to get engines.
Can any of you suggest a dealer/warehouse to purchase Reman Cummins 370HP and trannys?
Thanks!

I repowered a boat with 370hp Cummins remans several years ago. I contacted our local Cummins facility and received quotes. Also, they gave me 2 marinas that they work with for the install. Hope this helps. PS.the cost 3 years ago was 9000.00 each with 2 year warranty.

I got the hookup. :) :)

My buddy is a dealer and will take care of you as a Hatt brother. call me on my cell.407-739-5450.

Wow, that's CRAZY cheap for the 370's! They're about double that now I believe. They were $16,700 each in fall '06 when I was looking before the price increases.

Took your advice and called the the closest CM distributor I could find and his "rough estimate" on cost for NEW 370 Diamond engines, Twin disc 1.5:1 trannys & controls, etc was $32,000 per side! Yikes!

And I hate to say this...but I felt like I knew more about what was necessary than he did! If the pricing is correct....my repower project is most likely gonna crash and burn.......

You have to ask for the REMAN 370B, which is the older version. I believe they have a current 370 which is electronic and meets EPA requirements for new but is significantly more expensive which is probably what he quoted you.

I was at my favorite yard last week and the owner told me he's getting new (REMAN) 370B's with gears for $23k per side for a Bertram project. That probably included a couple grand for him.

Call Scott. I bet his guy knows what he is talking about!

Found out an interesting fact about TD trannys. The rear coupling and the shaft are pressed on with a 50 ton press and the rear seal requires the tranny to be removed to replace it. Also a special tool is required for about $8K. Not man shops getting them. My re builder has recommended ZF as a better choice for serviceability.

OhioHatt, what power do you presently have in you boat?

Try Tony, who is as straight as they come, or T&S Marine Engines in Crisfield, MD, who are great as well. Either one will give you a good deal.

You could call Edwards Marine in Ocean city MD, He is dealer for the recons and TD transmissions. My only question is why the 370B's. Why not the 330B's recon. They have to be cheaper, they will push your rig just as well as the 370's. You may see a little more in the WOT speed , but the cruise will be the same. The only mods you will have to do is the engine beds , and the 2 inch thru hulls, plus the fuel lines, and new props. I think Dr. jim got his engines from Ed.
Just a thought.

I ended up putting the benches I bought from you in my buddy's 51 scarbourgh. they worked out great.

We opted for the 330Bs on our 77 36C and are very pleased. If you PM me with a mailing address, I'll send you a copy of the data from the sea trial done by the Cummins engineer/rep. With 1/2 fuel and a light load/clean bottom (travel lift showed about 23,000 lbs, but who knows) the boat did about 29 KNTS @2860 RPM WOT. Props were 22x24 3 blade Michigan Nibrals, 1.5 to 1 ZF trans. Sweet spot for cruise was around 24KNTS @ about 2400 RPM. Now that the boat has gotten fat (25,000 lbs?), tuned props down to 22x23 to reach rated RPM, and have lost about 1 KNT across the spectrum. We went with the 330Bs, because of great reports from local commercial folks on reliability of these mechanical engines, and just not wanting to get the most hopped up version of the 5.9 liter B series. Power and torque for the 330/370Bs are the same from idle to 2800 RPM. The 370B electronics get another 200 RPM WOT, and that's where the addional HP comes from. As you already know, these boats are quite sensitive to weight, and if you want to cruise above 22/23 KNTS, with a heavy boat, you can use the extra HP, but will have to turn higher RPM. In order to compare these boats with these engine options, you have to know weights, trans rations and prop info. My sea trial data is hand written, and not in a form that can be posted. Since we have so many series one 36Cs on the forum, it would be interesting to see if we could post a survey where basic data on these boats (engines, weights, trans, props) was listed along with RPM, speed, GPH and other key performance info. Would really help those considering repowers, and also help the rest of us to get the most out of our great little boats. Maybe one of you who knows the forum better than I do can think of a way we can share this data. Other large hat populations on the forum are always exchanging performance info, but it would all be more useful with a standard format and set of critical boat parameters.

ohiohatteras, if you really like your boat and plan on keeping her a long time you will be thrilled with either 330s or 370s. Good luck, and let me know if you want any info/lessons learned from our recent repower.

Best Regards, Bob K

The prices are not that much different; I got mine from Eddie, and they gave me a good deal, but T&S would have done just as well. You can save some money by having them shipped from out of state- the shipping cost is not nearly what the taxes would be on an in-state sale.

With regard to the info above: my 36C has the 370B remans, ZF 1.5:1 gears, 21.5x22 four-blade Michigan props. Max speed is roughly 31.5 kts at 3040; this is with about half tanks of fuel, no water, all her other equipment on board, and two people up. That was this last spring. Probably that is a good figure for WOT performance.

No more Velcro engine mount jokes, please :)
