Zinc stuck in water pump

I tried to remove a pencil zinc in a Jabsco 8V71TI raw water pump assembly to check the zinc condition and found the cap came off while the solid zinc pencil is firmly corroded in the raw water pump assembly hole...(hole apparently to snug for the zinc)....

Anybody have any tricks for getting the remaining zinc out of the hole besides removing the whole water pump??

It's way up under the salon floor, not hatch accessible, in an awkward position... tough to reach....I could drill it of course, but then likely the interior zinc remains would drop inside and get pumped along to the intercoolers....not a good idea!!! Anybody used an easy out on this?? I think the zinc is too soft...Maybe a modest amount of heat on the bronze pipe assembly??

Use locktite bearing set (sleeve retainer) and screw the cap back in. Tomorrow try again to unscrew. Tighten a touch first, then loosen a tiny bit, then tighten etc.

Make sure you use the right locktite...it is bullet proof.

The pencil zinc is separated from the brass screw cap flush with the inside of the screw cap....
 
You put it on the threads and re tighten the cap on the zinc. Wait for whatever loctite says...does not have to be overnight. These are pressure activating polymers so it must tighten.

That idea could possibly work, but the zinc broke in such a way that a short piece of zinc(with threads) is already fused inside the brass plug while most of the zinc fractured plugging the hole in the water pump assembly...in other words I have only a small area to potentially "glue" the two pieces of zinc together....These pencil zincs seem more toruble than they are worth...
 
If there are no threads on the piece in the pump it will not work. It is not "glue" it simply jams the threads (or sleeves, bearings etc.) so it will not un-thread.

It sounds like your best option is to remove the cover and impeller and then either drill out the zinc or possibly tap it through with a straight punch. Unfortunately it sounds like you may need to remove the pump. With the pump off you may be able to dissolve the zinc remnants with ospho.

Is the output housing bolted on and removable?

On my engines (6V92s) it was, and wasn't hard to remove. Removal of the entire water pump was not required.
 
Why remove it all? Just wait for it to corrode. Or ignore it. Or do it when you HAVE to take the pump off...

That could work if it doesn't eventually find it's way into the impeller.

What about this: get a new plug, file down the outer threads on the plug so that it will easily slide into the hole and screw onto the remaining zinc threads, then pull the zinc out.

Hope it works.
 
There are no threads left on the portion of the zinc stuck in the raw water pump assembly....it appears the the zinc fractured leaving two raggedly flat ends......I would not leave the zinc stuck there indefinitely, but it's sure ok for another season, because when it does finally flake/break off it will head for the intercoolers...I think it's in the output side of the raw water pump but I'm not sure because the location is so awkward....guess we'll put this on the "to do list" for this winter.
 
REB... cant you take the flange off and reach in and break off the remainder for now? ws

I can't actually get a clear sight of the thing....but yes I think removing two cap bolts gets to it...Thanks for the photo "reminder".....

I can just barely see the zinc cap and once the "flange" is removed I still have to reach way up and around...can't see what you are doing in there....likely a "mirror job" if I can squeeze one in there and see....thanks for the suggestions, just another "fun" job, to look forward to ....

Hey REB... last year I changed out my pump and installed a spare. The whole job lasted 30 minutes. Get a new gasket/O ring and bite the bullet! It may really be simpler in the long run!!
Let me know if I am missing something... wheres the plug? I dont recall one in the pump, but there is one on the outlet elbow... ws

Hey Bill, I'll bet you did not have to work upside down with your head stuck up your......well anyway, my pump assembly is in a location under the floor where it takes twice as long...have to go by feel....

I have removed a pump for rebuild myself and the flange as well....so I know I can get the flange off, but it ain't easy....even though I AM getting younger, I don't seem to bend/twist/contort the way I used to!!!!
