  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
36' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1969 -1977)
I'm seriously thinking about repainting the ole 76 36' this winter as a Birthday present for her....she's turning 30! :)
Anyway....I've been back and forth about a hundred times on whether to paint the hull - Fighting Lady Yellow or Snow White
I must have asked a dozen people already and most say the yellow will look great, "but".........
I don't have to commit for a little while yet , So......I'm throwing it out here....please gimme your $.02! :D
THANKS!

Personally I've seen one yellow hull and didn't like it. It could affect resale if that's an issue....

But....A new paint job looks great regardless of the color. Paint it the color that you like best and enjoy it....

Be aware of sun fading issues......

Colored hulls look great - for a year or two. This is particularly true if your dockage exposes one area to the sun significantly more than another.....

We are planning on painting our 46C hull yellow and top sides snow white. I have seen several and think they look great. Most new big Sf are being delivered with colored hulls. Make sure you pick the right yellow. I have seen some that look greenish yellow and others a softer yellow.

I think if you take care of it it will last just fine. There is a yellow 52C in CT that was here in NJ several years ago. That boat was painted at least 7 years ago and still looks great. I know someone with a navy blue 41 Viking. The paint on that boat is at least 8 years old and still looks like new. I think if it is done right and cared for it will last.

Personal opinion on Fighting Lady Yellow, best looking color out there. If you want to get lost in the crowd, paint her white.

Mine was Awlgriped with FLY about 5years ago, still looks as good as it did then. we coat her 1 to 2x per year with Awlcare and keep it clean. 1967 34c.

you may want to review photos of another 36 on this web site, Cathy L is a fine example. I dont think you will find a finer looking boat out there. also get the slane vents like he did since you are repainting.

I agree with Steve the fighting lady yellow is a nice color. Spray a Trojan F32 with it and a pure white top for a friend and it is sharp looking " even with it being a Trojan :-}. The yellows hold up very well on a hull its the dark color that can be a problem!

I prefer a light gray color. I painted my 34 C light gray hull with blue accent striped above the hull and on the bridge. The deckhouse and bridge are white. No fading issues at this time as the color is very light but distinctive.

Look at the pics of all the different colors on the owners pages. Pick the color you like best and go for it!!!!!! My hull is midnight blue with white topsides, I think it looks great that color and don't care if someone else doesn't think so. Your boat should suit you not the anticipated next owner. Mine was painted with imron and it lasts about ten years. I am due to repaint now.
Good Luck with your project, Fred

To me and my conservative tastes, a Hatt with a yellow hull is a bit like a Brooks Brothers suit with sneakers..... :)

How about the 45 Palm Beach Edition in the mid 80's? Didn't they have either a yellow or blue hull? Anyone have any pictures or a scan of the original brochure?

There is a 36 or 38 Hatt that was redone by Tom Slane in New Jersey. Boats name is Two Coats (hey I didn't name it) (lol). That boat is painted with the colors you mentioned (Yellow/White). Gotta say it looks really pretty. Have also seen boats (Mostly Vikings) painted with an Ice Blue Hull and Matterhorn White Topsides, and I think that looks really nice!

Anyhow, like the others have said. Look at the other boats and Decide what's right for you.!!!

We are in South Florida and painted the Kathy L in "FLY" about 7 years ago. Last month had Tom Slayne make new side vents, for repower, and had him paint them "FLY" Perfect Match!!! John.

I think colored hulls look great. I didn't do it on Blue Note because I was trying for a vintage look and wanted her to look as much as possible like she did when new. I have seen a lot of older boats done with light yellow, light green, light blue hulls and they look fine. And Flag Blue looks great, BUT gets hotter than hell and doesn't wear all that well. Although it seems to hold up well on Hinckleys and sailboats. Go for it, it's your baby.

A Hatteras any color will look good. Anytime you paint a boat white it will look bigger. I think adding color to any boat makes them look like toy boats. Even though they look nice. Color on a sport fish would work but not on a MY. White is elegant and pure just like the Hatteras boats. Bill

Thanks for all your replys so far! Please keep em' coming! :)

Hell you could paint a vintage Hatteras battleship grey and it would look good. I personally like the FLY and light Carolina blue but looking around the dock so does everyone else. I echo what other have said, it's your baby so paint her with what "floats your boat". Bob

I think you question was how well colors such FLY hold up. I can verify that it holds up fine and Kathy L verifies the same after 7 yrs. keep color clean and use the Awl-Care 1-2 x per year.

I don't know about you, but I really like the original Hatteras Off-white. It is such a signature color. Everyone knows when they see that color that it's a Hatt. When I was looking for my boat, I passed on a 53MY that had been painted with the new Hatteras bright white. I don't know, it just looked "wrong" to me.

But, I agree with Trojan, that a SF is different than a motoryacht. Hull colors are more acceptable on a SF. So, I echo the other comments, with "it's your baby, do what you like".

funny that someone mentioned "battleship grey" ... it has actually crossed my mind .... and probably flat instead of gloss.
Different, but kinda cool, I think .... for an old 45
