  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
52' CONVERTIBLE (1983 - 1990)
I have a beautiful 70 1991 CPMY which is spotless and mechanically perfect. In as much as I am too old to handle a boat this size I would like to find a smaller SF up to 52 feet which I could handle easily with the help of a mate. The boat must be in excellent condition and we could help each other to exchange boats. My boat has new Stainless galley, new watermaker, new bow thrusters, new AB Inflatable, new 40hp Honda 4cy,new Eperb, new 6man raft, new batteries, new Amtico flooring in gally and wheelhouse,New carpet and wall coverings throught. I love the boat but I can not stand the problems with hirred capt and crew. I want to remain on the water but as a owner operator. The 70 CPMY is a dream for the home on the water owner with younger body than this Captain. What do you have to trade? Thanks for spreading the word. Sincearly, WW Gilman I have owned 8 Hatterases

What does it mean "too old to handle a boat this size". That is, what specifically is the obstacle that you think would be removed by a 52 ft convertible? My guess is if you can handle one you can handle the other.
Do you need a different slip location? Do you need a bow thruster? Do you need someone available on the dock to assist you in landing? Do you need a TV camera to aid in stern to docking? Maybe you can make a modest change if you are interest in keeping your current boat...

I have all of the above and feel that my age effects many things includeing insurance with a 70 ft boat. I have been told a captain or we will not cover the vessel. I donot need a captain as I have had many and with each another problem. Thanks for your suggestions. WW Gilman

I am sorry to hear that you are no longer enjoying your lovely Hat. I hope you get all those issues straightened out and continue with life to a very old age.

I'd be darned if I wouldn't try a different insuance company. With all of your experience, you should certainly be insurable for any boat you own and intend to operate. Sounds like plain old age discrimination to me. What company is doing this to you?

I agree with Seaeric's comments...dump the insurance company ....unless you are ready to make the change to a smaller boat...

I agree regarding insurance. And I don't see how a 52' convertible is going to be any easier to handle than a 70 CMY. With a convertible you have side deck accessiblity issues that you don't have on a cockpit motoryacht. You also have a harder time getting from the helm station to assist in line handling, unless you also have cockpit controls. Just a few other things to consider.

I agree! Your insurance company is your problem, not your boat. You just finished so many projects on the 70 I'd hate to see you let her go because some stuffy underwriters don't like the year that you happened to be born. That is age discrimination. With all of your boating experience, I'll bet you can handle a vessel way better than most "young" folks.

If you do swap for a smaller vessel, I would suggest a smaller cockpit motor yacht, preferably with full walk-around side decks. There is no easier boat to handle when short-handed. As SKY mentioned, convertibles are more difficult to dock simply due to the restricted access to the bow.

Shop around for an insurance company that puts experience FIRST!
