Hatteras Model
74' COCKPIT MY (1995 - 1999)
Although it is only October, I am starting to think about winter projects. Right now, the entire dash area which is parallel to the waterline in the pilot area of my 74 MY is covered in a suede fabric. It looks nice but is not suitable for placing anything on it, such as a can of soda, a sweaty hat, moist binocs etc. I was thinking about putting a smoked plexiglass ( or suitable hard surface) over the suede to make it more functional. While I do not have the talent to do it myself, I was curious who or what type of vendor might be the best source to make a quality template ( with appropriate cut outs for throttles, clutched, bow thruster joystick etc.) and then make the plexiglass cover. Perhaps Hatteras has a template that can be modified. Any suggestions on vendors or types of vendors would be appreciated. I am on Long Island in New York. Also, if you folks think this is a silly idea, I'd like to hear that as well. Thanks.

A picture would help. Not sure how much area your talking about either. What about using a quality vinyl? are you thinking the plexi will be clear or a opaque? I's be concerned about scratches with the plexi. Would something like Formica work better? Hatteras used a burled walnut patterned formica type material on many boats in the late 80's/early '90's. I have that on my dash and it looks real nice. Search yachtworld and see what other 74MYs have. Not sure if what you have is OEM.

I would be concerned about the condensation from your drinks or any spills getting under the plexi and making a horrible mess of the underlying material.

I would look into completely removing the base section and doing it in some sort of solid surface like corian, wood, or even a nice looking dark colored Formica.

Thanks for the replies. I had the Formica on my 56 and was hoping to go in a different direction here. But, as always, the insights gained here will probably steer me away from my original plan. Thanks for the help.

I had a nasty fake suede material in my master stateroom. Had it replaced with a Wilsonart product. I did not do the work myself but am glad I had it done. It would collect dust and every stain.

Try a retailer such as
https://www.plexi-craft.com/order-custom-acrylic-products.html

I used one in New Rochelle, NY, another nearby in Pelham, NY, some years ago....

They'd make anything...for example, I had helm instrument covers made, also a custom 1" thick pair of translucent doors....with the vertical exposed edge polished clear.....

Also, I think 'plexiglas' is a brand name, also seach under 'acrylic' for similar products.

And consider placing some no skid perforated material atop the surface to prevent sliding on the smooth surface. Lowes and Home Depot carry the stuff. Don't want that beer to go asloshing!!
