  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
52' CONVERTIBLE (1983 - 1990)
Hi everyone, we are going through the process of repair and rebuild on our 52C due to damage from Hurricane Harvey. My wife and I have been discussing upgrading the salon windows. Currently we have the factory original ones that can be opened, what has everyone done? Any thoughts or pros and cons would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Brooks

If you dont open them get the fiberglass frames and make them permanently watertight.

If you need front windows I just removed a set plus the w wings from a 52c.

Price is right.

Harvey took out all of my salon windows also. Planning to just replace the glass as the frames are good and I like the open window option. Front windows are glassed in. I like the set up -sliders on the sides, no fronts and textiline curtains on sides and back. Can see out. Can't see in and 95% plus of solar heat gain blocked.

Sorry to hear that Harvey got your windows, Where is your boat located? We got lucky all of our windows are intact we suffered lots of fiberglass damage and windshield curtains ect? We are just thinking its a good time to upgrade.

PO spent $10k and went frameless. It's a really nice upgrade making the boat look newer and sleeker. They do tend to become unseated after a time. Maybe it's improper installation. I've gone back with 3M 8609 glass adhesive getting rid of the silicone. Any minor leaks are easily handled by Capt Tolley's. As a precaution in TS's and hurricanes, I keep the high pressure wind load from possibly unseating them.

If you are looking to keep the boat long time and in good looking shape. The current window frams will be a
never ending project. The things will have to be sanded and primed and painted year after year. Once the corrosion
starts its hard to control. If you have blinds, curtons or some sort of treatment inside the boat it will help deflect heat.
However purchasing the tented glass is the way to go. There are many kinds of glass it is a personal choice. Putting a film on the outside will help but will peal or scratch in time. I have replaced all the windows and frames using Cape Lookout windows Brodas Rose.

The rear window frame and glass from Cape lookout windows was around 3,500 the side windows both sides meaning 4 pieces of glass and frames was about 9,000. It is a little costly but you are through with it no more sand and paint. I elected to jell coat my frames black,
i am done. The front windows were glassed in when the boat was new. This is the only pick i have but if you would like to see more and closer let me know i will get some this weekend and shoot them to you.
I AM FAT IN THE PICK BUT I HAVE LOST ALMOST 60 POUNDS ITS A LIFE CHANGER. But now i can crawl around in the engine room. HURAY

I was at Cove Harbor on the fixed docks. Boat broke loose, took three piling with it and ended up accross the harbor up against an oil barge. Can repair all but the tuna tower. Just went on the hard at Hookin Bull. Work, work, work.....

Tim, CONGRATULATIONS on loosing the almost 60 lbs. That's tough for guys our age. Way too go!

Tim, you were just short for your weight. You weren't fat.

Windows,... yeah, whatever. 60 lbs is a serious accomplishment. Spill the secret, how do you lose the weight and keep it off?

IF IT IS WHITE DO NOT EAT IT. POTATOES/ GRITS/ BREAD / SUGAR/ . Purchase a egmachine at Bed Bath and beyond it cooks from 1 to 8 eggs.Just pore water in the thing and wait the amount of water determines how hard or soft. Every morning 2 to 4 soft boiled and a coup of coffee no cream and no sugar.
Lunch is salids ZAXBIES aint bad. Supper meat and veggies. It will do it. i have stoped taking meds for sugar. IT IS HARD BEEN AT IT NOW FOR ABOUT 8 MONTHS. Have no thinking of quitting. It not bad for the marriage ether. Energy level out the roof.

Just gotta say i got a wonderful wife who helped all the way through the progress.

BarkDee ours was in key Allegero and it stayed tied to most of its dock but dock gave way and it went from the aportfish dock at them end to rest near the office. It is being towed to hook n bull tomorrow and will be making a full assessment then. We fared way better than many others but have a lot of work to do, hopefully this winter will be bearable and can get some work done. I was told that at the airport that clocked winds sustaining over 140 mph, I wasn't surprised when many of the boats and building took such heavy damage.

Thanks Tim for the info, I made contact with the lead you gave me they are seen some stuff over. Did you install yourself ?

Yes and no. I keep my boat as a working mariner. My boat is on a long dock so it was easy to get to the windows. Reversed the boat and got the other side. I just got in the way. But i did all i could. the other frames were screwed and 5200 in. No leakes were found.
They were tuff took two days to take out and replace and trim the inside. We apoxied the new ones in they are part of the boat now.

Per side my windows are two pieced because there is a (can not think the name) chase in the middle which required a flat gellcoated piece about 5 inches by 3 feet. The sides look like one window. If you look in the pick i sent over my left shoulder you will see the brake if you look good,

Thanks for the advice. Looks like I'll have to give up the few things left that I thought I could still enjoy. Congrats on the 60 lbs though. I need to drop about half that and haven't done nearly as well as you. Keep up the good work.

Texastailboard, you were lucky to get out of Key Allegro without major damage. I'll stop by and say hello after you're set up in the yard.

Tim, congratulations on the loss of 60 pounds. Beat me by 20! I gave back 40 since the beginning of 2017 and the hardest part is maintenance. My self imposed diet was basically eliminate sugar, eat healthier foods, eat about 1/3 of what I considered a meal, and most important of all for me was convincing my mind that feeling hungry was OK. I feel a lot better and can also get around the engine room better.
