  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
Well, I've read thru all the helpful posts but still having "challenges" removing three cracked windows in my 53'MY. Portside salon window (the one that slides, not the one that's fixed) suffered a bad crack during the winter due to temperature differential (I assume). Won't lift out of the rails so I tried jacking it, but there's no movement and it caused a couple hairline cracks in the external fiberglass. I sure don't want to have to remove the entire frame (well caulked and glued in back in 1969 when she was built!) I saw one member's idea about taping and scoring the window, but someone else said because it's plate glass, they didn't think that would work...? I realize I can break it out, but then wouldn't have a template. I could take my chances with measurements or do a paper template and then have the glass cutter cut the window an 1/8" less in height, but would rather hear from someone's experience...

The other two cracked windows are in the galley - both sides and both are on the sliding windows. I have no idea how to remove/replace those??

While you have the jack(s) in place, check to see if the edge channel on one or both windows is keeping it from lifting up enough to remove the window. I had one like that, and used a dremel tool to cut the top of the channel about 3/8" lower. Now it lifts up and out without much trouble.

10/4 on the aluminum extrusion at the back vertical edge of the windows. It must be removed from the glass in order to remove it. Also, the wooden block at the top center of the window frame must be removed. Once that is done, slide the window to the center of the frame, use a suction cup glass handle (available at harbor freight), from the outside, lift up on the glass until the bottom edge clears the track and pull out. Ps, tap the rear extrusion with a small hammer, away from the glass, hey it's glass, nothing sticks well to it.
