Searched previous threads but could not find answer: What do people do for "routine" maintenance on their windlass motor? I was told I should change the oil every several years, however I have no info on how to do this, what type of oil to use, etc. Not having issues, but don't want to either. My guess is PO did not do much in way of maintaining the unit.

Thanks,

The problem with changing the oil is getting the old stuff out.

I removed my windlass for maint several years ago (1979 boat) and I suspect it was the first time that ever happened. The oil was like tar. After soaking it in gasoline for several days, I got it all freed up and spinning freely. I used 90 wt gear oil in it, and while it was out, I tapped the thickest part of the bottom that I could find for a plug. This now allows me to change the oil periodically.

On my Galley Maid windless there are 2 drain plugs. I remove both to drain into container. Install lower plug and insert nozzle of SAE 90 gear oil into top until full and insert plug. Very easy to do on mine, everything is in front and easy to get to. I do it every 3 years.

Your windlass manufacturer should be able to tell you. What kind and style do you have? If a vertical, you also want to get a little light oil on the capstan shaft so it doesn't become a a bear to get the capstan off. While you are at it, you may replace the clutch plate. But again, contact the windlass mfr.

Thanks, this gives me a good starting place.

Do you have an Ideal?? It's fairly simple if you do. Remember to NOT fill the gear box full of Oil but only cover the gears, so as not to put excess pressure on the motor seal which is the weak point in the system, if you have an Ideal.

It is actually galley maid. Manual was not that informative other than the 90 wt oil. I think I will do it when weather warms up and oil may be easier to get out of the unit. Thanks for your replies!
