Windlass is Galley Maid capstan only. Am thinking of upgrading switching to a new windlass that includes a chain wildcat. Has anyone done this with a 43 DCMY with bow pulpit? Is this a difficult change? Any threads on changing out the windlass someone can refer me to?

Is anyone familiar with the Anchorlift MAKO 1500? Found a new one on Craigslist for $800. Seems reasonable. Just not sure if it will work for my application...43 DCMY with pulpit. Profile of the windlass kind of looks like there is not enough space for the deck and pulpit to fit between the windlass (above deck) and gear (below deck). Gear housing for the MAKO 1500 is much smaller than the Galley Maid. How do the MAKO's hold up in comparison over time?

I don't have a GM windlass, ours is an Ideal, but the GM that is commonly seen on Hatts was a copy of the Ideal (Ideal filed a copyright infringement) so I ASSUME you can mount a capstan/gypsy on the GM windlass. That would be a lot less trouble/expense though the gypsys aren't cheap! Have you checked with GM re this?

FWIW, the GM/Ideal windlass to which I am referring is the one that was normally mounted on 53's; maybe a totally different model was used on other boats and the design does not allow capstan/gypsy. In that case, my suggestion above would not apply.

The folks at GM are very helpful. Call and see if they have parts to make the change to your old unit.
