  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
61' MOTOR YACHT (1980 - 1985)
The time has come to upgrade the original galley maid windlass with one that can handle chain.
Anyone care to weigh in on what I should consider?
thanks

No question in my experience, Maxwell, they last forever, good parts availability and built like tanks. John

If the rest is good, you might just replace the drum with a gypsey from Galleymaid.

I tried that route, I called galley maid, the unit is to old to be upgraded.

Stay away from Anchorlift.

Anchorlift the worst piece of junk I ever purchased. Nothing but trouble.

You should consider a Lofrans. Very good quality.

No luck with lewmar hears good about maxwell

I ve used both lewmar and maxwell, both good units.

I m Going to replace my galley maid (all chain plus rope capstan on top) with either lewmar or maxwell since I m converting to 24v Will have it for sale.

I have a Maxwell 2200, vertical, it has done a good job. Use it often.

Buy American (and great service) and get an Ideal. They service everything they've ever made and new ownership seems to be keeping that tradition.

Still make 32v if that's what you have,

Another American product that is excellent is RC Plath in Oregon.

I agree with George regarding the Ideal. I bought a new one from them for my previous Hatteras and the only improvement I would like to see is 316 Stainless Steel for everything that would be subject to water or humidity. A little pricey but remember....."if you want first quality grade A oats, it costs so much a pound, if you're satisfied with oats that passed through the horse before, it will be a little cheaper".

Walt,I went looking for the Ideal Windlass Company and it looks they were purchased by Schaefer Marine. Jon

I was not aware that Ideal was sold. They were a great company and I have had a wonderful experience with them. Hopefully Schaefer Marine will continue the good work and maybe even come out with them in SS.
