  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
45' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1968 - 1975)
We have been underway for 8 hours today we have 2 to go. My starboard engine temp is creeping up from 180 to 190 over the past 3 hours at the helm. we have plenty of water exiting the exhaust and my engine room gauges are rock solid at 180. I am inclined to trust the engine room but would like some opinions please. Thanks Duncan

My engine room gauges are mechanical and I have verified the temp gauge with an electronic heat gun. Would recommend one because you can check the temperatures at different places places looking for blockages

I will do but I can't do that now. Given both engines are reading exactly the same in the engine room it makes sense that a gauge is going bad. I was looking for a warm and fuzzy.

IMO, go with engine room gauges. As a rule they are hard wired and not electric. Also if your infra-red gun registers same as engine room gauge. You should be good to go.

There is your warm and fuzzy. Believe in the engine gages change sending unit upon arrival tomorrow i find the sending unit goes before the gage.

Quick update we spent 3 days at Cuttyhunk Island in Massachusetts. If you are ever in this are it's a must do. Provisions are scarce so come with cabinets and fridge full. It's a great place to forget about life for a while. Ok onto engine temps I am assuming a sending unit is on its way out. We left Cuttyhunk for the Vineyard and temps were rock solid the 2 1/2 hours we were running. I will try to get a sending unit here if not it will get replaced when I get home. Thanks guys my gut feeling was the gauge and a little confirmation made me feel good about continuing on the trip.

Cuttyhunk is one of my favorite spots on the cape. Very peaceful and they also have the cheapeast dockage in the area (at lest the last time I was there)

You should also stop at Hadley harbor, across from woods hole. I've anchored in there a few times, very tight in the inner harbor but it feels like you re stepping back in time.

Martha's Vineyard onthe other hand has never impressed me. Too busy and too many chance of running into a kennedy or Obama

I would agree about the Vineyard. I was overruled and had to leave Cuttyhunk My son and I could have spent the whole vacation there he is 5 years old and just loved it.

2 Thumbs up on Cuttyhunk too! Think Pascal recommended few years ago and had best time there on 2 week trip of various destinations. Wouldn't think such a place existed in this day and age.

Made my fist stop there cruising with my parents about 45 years ago and have been back many times since. It's still one of my favorites.

On our way back to Boston, we had a great trip, however last nights dinner plans were derailed because Michelle Obama had reservations at the restaurant we wanted to go to.

I see we have some obama fans on deck!

I am no fan of their politics, but this is awful can I delete them?

Back on point...

The last time we were in Cuttyhunk was about 14 years ago when my daughters were just 3 and 4 years old. I remember we were on a mooring and the kids (and me) were fascinated with the sea plane taking off and landing right next to the mooring field. There was a nice little playground at the top of the hill and fresh lobsters for sale at one of the docks.

We loved that place and could have spent the whole summer there also.

Now our girls are off in college, we just became "empty nesters" as of this past weekend and my wife and I are looking forward to going back to Cuttyhunk in our Hatteras this time.

I have mechanical gauges in the engine room and look at them every hour when running. I also like to shoot a temp off the engines with my infrared thermometer while I am there as well. But I suffer from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Aren't we supposed to talk about boats and issues around them?

If I never go back to the Vineyard fine with me. Cuttyhunk on the other hand is already on next years to do list. My son and I just loved it we fished and swam and rode bikes. Could not get enough of the family atmosphere.

As an aside, I have seen this recently (past few months) on other forums for other topics, it is almost as if there has been some sort of official approval of such expressions and they seem to be more common these days.

Have noticed on our boat the electric gauges shows change in temp before the mechanical gauges. Our electric gauges creeped to 190 one time and it took a few minutes for the engine room mechanical gauges to match. Hope this helps!

Hmmm...so did the you get the new sending unit, and did it address the issue?

It could also be a loose wire, as many of the sending units are resistance based, so a loose connection may read higher. I've got that issue on my generator as we speak.

I have not looked into it as of yet. I did dive the boat the other day and found some barnacle growth on the sea strainers. This does not explain the discrepancy between the two gauges, but maybe there is a delay in the engine room gauge as a prior post suggested.
