Where would you mount this radar antenna?

  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' LRC (1975 - 1981)
I picked up a new "used" Garmin 24HD a few weeks ago and am trying to figure out where to mount it. Simrad will stay up there and used in the pilothouse. Garmin will act as a back-up on the flybridge.

It will probably mount on the soft top structure - but I'd prefer not to do that.

Any room on one of those wings, Jeff? Or is it too big and heavy?

What is the small dome? Remove it?? and move the sat dome up then put the 'new' radar antenna on the sat dome platform?

My backup dome radar which is used when I remove my radar arch to go up to Vermont is mounted on the brow--just below the bridge windscreen. Easy and effective but you do sacrifice the ability to see behind your vessel. I would not mess with the nice setup you presently have.

Remember you cant use the RADAR on the flybridge brow if anyone is on the bridge.

It has to be above the people by 2 feet for safety.

Agreed. I am never on the bridge when this radar is in use.

OT: Have you been able to get to Lake Champlain on your 56? the bridge is 17 feet and the lowest I can get is 18-9. Can they lower to pool that far? We'd love to make that trip someday.

Jeff, I've got this mount for sale if you have the need. For Garmin radar dome and in excellent condition.

George - I have made the trip many, many times. I can get down to 17'3" (more below) and have made the lowest fixed bridge (which us usually the railroad bridge just south of Lock 12) by as little as a fist. Although the Canal Authority does not advertise it, they can lower the pool between locks so that you can make the trip. That's the good news. The bad news is that in order to do so, I literally strip the bridge down as follows. First, the radar arch comes off of the boat. Second, both biminis and the windshield on the bridge are removed. Third, the railings that hold the forward bimini are removed. Fourth, the bridge seats (for the pilot and co) are removed. Fifth, and this shows you how close it is, you must remove the clutch handles on the bridge because when in neutral, they are the highest point once the bridge is stripped. That leaves the fiberglass wings just in front of the radar arch as the highest points on the boat. If you go to my pictures, you will see a picture called topless in Vermont, that is what the boat looks like when stripped down for the Champlain Canal trip. A lot of work but would not miss it for the world.

Mike, thanks for the offer, but I've already got two of those sitting in the garage! :)

I think I'm going to need something like this:
