  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
I need to replenish my fuel filter stock. I have twin racor 1000 and currently have 30m filters installed. My last box has a mix of 20m and 30m filters. Should I have a 20 in one and a 30 in the other? I also need to get the Eng mounted filters for fuel and oil also. Where’s a good place to get everything from? I guess I should get zincs and belts also.

Racor mud filters come in 30, 10 & 2mic. I wish 20, but that is it.
You will want the Mud (Racor) filter at 30Mic.

Pending your engine model and if it has the original filters can help to answer the rest of your filter question.
On my engines, I have the big Racor mud filters, then a spin on primary with sight bowl then a secondary (3 filter set up).
This replaces the original DDC cartridge mud filter and a DDC secondary.
This is why I ask you, if your engine filter config is original or modified.

Zincs,,, Carry the heads of your zincs into a better West Marine store and match them up.
They also offer fresh Racor filters.

Cartridge and spin on fuel & oil filters can come from NAPA, my DDC shop or Donaldson directly.

I have and do suggest, when in doubt, stay factory or factory part number exchanges.
Not a part from a Caterpillar or Cummins that may fit.

Send in a picture of your filters install and serial number if you are not sure of what you have.

Try Racorstore.com I've used them several times and always order in bulk. Good prices, fast shipping.

With twin racors you should use 30 microns in both and run one at a time. This way you always have one ready to go in case you have an issue. Then at each oil change, replace the one that was being used, test it to make sure it a primer and switch to the other one that was on stand by.

For the secondaries, on the engine, use whatever the engine manufacturer recommends, usually 2 microns

Racors can be found on line or at every marine store… I always carry at least 4 to 6 on board. The secondaries can be found at any Detroit, Cummins or Cat dealer, depending on what you have, or online

Everything appears to be original. I have 8v71ti’s. My racors don’t have a valve between filters so I’m sol there.

I got my last case of filters from the Flag Store (Parker / Racor) as soon as you cross the bridge.
Deal Marine across the bridge will give you an account and discount. I got my last zincs there. There paint was cheaper then boat shop, west marine and a few others. Filters from Napa (you can get oil there as well), and Boat shop gave me an antifreeze at a good price.

I ran 2 micron in mine for 19 years. Never an issue. My theory was that I never wanted to be out in heavy seas changing a secondary. Catch it all in the primary and switch over to the clean one when it shows high vac on the gauge. Then replace that dirty Racor at the dock and not at sea.

After the Racor 2020V30, I would order proper filters from DDC to ensure the correct part numbers with your serial numbers.
On the 71, there was a few secondary (final) filters. For example; 23530643 is 16Mic and 23530644 is 5 mic.
If you use a Racor, Then the DDC primary filter
TP-624 cartridge, use the 5 Mic final filter.
Again, your config (3 total filters??) and serial numbers would be a better guide on your filter selection, then go shopping.

Other folks may have been very lucky using a fine filter first, but in a real world, the better filter systems that do not restrict fuel flow suddenly when that turd comes out of your tank, will be a multiple and gradual reduction in mesh before your injectors.

You commented that you do not have dual mud filters to rotate between, stage reduction will save you many headaches.

On our old rig, we have dual mud filters and still use staged reduction filters.

I’ve run the 2 micron also since I put the racors on in 1978 near 20,000 hours of charter service never a problem

2 mic as a primary filter. Yes, another lucky operator.

I use 2 micron racor as the primary also, and just had a crew polish my fuel (free-friend wanted a new guy trained). They commented that whatever it is we were doing, keep it up. As Sky and rsmith said, 3x.
In a new boat to you, it will take some time to get the fuel and tanks cleaned to this level, but it simplifies life after that.

Thanks Phil I’ll have to stop there and stock up. Never liked “the boat store” owner was a prick on two separate occasions.
I’ll be on my boat on Saturday so I’ll verify my numbers and snap a few pics. Thanks for everyone’s responses.

I would like a pic of this also. Dual Racors with no valves?
Could these be staged filter assemblies?
