where in fl.would you get your painted

I have a 46 Hatt under contract that needs painting top to bottom. Where and who would suggest. I perfer Imron. I would also like to fiberglass the three front windows in along with putting in slane vents. Any advise you guys would give would be great. Thanks

I live in the promise land if you know what I mean. They charge high prices for second rate work. The last boat I had done up here took almost 2 years. What hair I have left after that experence will be gone if I do that again here. Someone on this site said that there was a good boatyard that did great work some where around stuart or a little north of stuart but I don't remember the name.

there are some great yards around the Stuart and palm beach areas. Do you need to get rid of that much money? If so Buy a bigger boat or send some my way.

FWIW I used to paint boats in NY. I have not done it in 20 years and when I redo mine I will do the prep and have a pro spray the final coats. Dan ( 34Hatt ) can paint too as I remember his old willys when we were teenagers but I am not that good.

Starman has a good rep on the site for fair prices and good work. The real secret to getting a great paint job is the 3 basic processes.

1) PREPERATION which needs to be flawless. It needs to be done strong and smooth. No puttys for patches. Use a system from barrier coar primer to scratch putty.

2) Spray. This is the one job that gets the most attention but is the easiest and least time consuming. Usually a hotshot painter has no patience to do the prep. If the guy is good then there is no reason to rub out the job aggressively and it will be smooth.

3) Reassembly. The most important and often overlooked part. Every thing removed has to be re bedded and sealed or ita all for nothing. Pay attention to this as it can screw up the best jobs.

Find someone who can handle the job and let them do their magic. Make sure your expectations are in writing and an enforcable contract and then go at it.

Merritt's in Pompano Beach does very good work, but they're brush work only. Several other freelancers in the area, too.

There are a couple of spray yards out on the Marina Mile in Lauderdale, but your boat will go away for quite a while. Not sure of their rates at all.

Preparation, preparation, preparation. Paul has gotten several compliments on the prep work. A quality paint job is in the surface preparation, the painting is the easy part. Granted you can't have an idiot paint it, but if the prep work is bad, even the best painters cannot fix bad prep work. A Hatteras factory guy was at the yard recently and ran his hand down the hull and remarked that they didn't leave the factory that smooth. I will recommend that you come investigate some of the yards around this part of NC, since it is on the way home and still close enough to home that you can easily check up on the job. You will not be disappointed. My boat is waiting on the right conditions to receive paint. The painter wants the right temps and humidity. You can certainly come look at mine very soon to see what these boys here can do. Plus the prices are excellent, a lot less than I have seen quoted on this forum. I would send a PM to Starman and get some input. I can recommend him and you can see the quality of work first hand. There have been quite a few pictures of my boat going through refurb posted on this forum. Get some quotes in Florida and the check the prices around here. Plus you just might be able to squeeze a trip over to Sam's while you are here.

Ft Pierce FL. Crackerboy boat yard is DIY yard , you can do all the work you want except spraying, they have a group of contractors that work there exclusively. going to cost around 1k per foot hull and top side. plus filling in windows. etc.

The boat is located at Swan Point Marina in Sneads Ferry, NC (it is just south of Jacksonville, NC). Paul Starzinski is the shipwright doing the work, Swan Point did the repower and gears. Paul is the only one allowed to do work in the yard that is not an employee. That should speak volumes. You can reach him at 910.455.4866. I call him fairly late and he usually answers his calls.
