Howdy yall... My buddies boat upper helm wheel will spin freely in either direction but does not turn the rudders. Lower helm is operating fine. No signs of leaks, system is pressured up... She is a Hatteras double cabin motor yacht.....

Any suggestions?

Cheers!

I can tell you this. When I experienced this same problem, it was a leak in the Hynautic steering system. It required finding/repairing the leak, adding some Hynautic fluid, then bleeding the system. I don't recall the specific order (I think upper helm first, then lower?)but ultimately getting all of the air out, then turning the wheel at each helm 100's of times in each direction to eventually return to normal operation. What a PITA!!! No trouble since. Not really expensive, just terribly timne consuming.

Make sure the fluid level and pressure are correct and bleed your system. You likely have air in the upper station. I believe SAM's has instructions or you can get them from Hynautic.
