  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
60' MOTOR YACHT (1987 - 1989)
I've got some old that is sun-bleached, so I'm using 600 grit then alcohol then ...?
And I've got brand new that is REALLY light, and I want to get it close as I can.

You are going to have to play with it. Is there a scrap piece of the same grain that can be a test board? In my experience it takes a touch of cherry, but it is sure easy to overdo it.

First thing, wet some of the panel with just thinners and see how it looks relative to the rest. If too brown (and this is a judgment call) add some cherry stain to some of the oil and test that. You can always add more. Minwax is a wimpy stain so it might be a good one to start with. If after you have several coats of oil on you want to adjust the color, you need to go for a stronger stain. My preference is General stains.

Be sure to tell us (pics too) how it worked out.

Sams sells their version of the original Dupont 704C. It is an exact match although like any new wood, it starts out lighter and darkens over time.

We had to replace some water stained afromosia panels. I found that by letting the new panel age in the open atmosphere for a month or so after sanding the surface with 220/340, it darkened sufficiently so that the Sam's elixir brought it to a very close match to the original. Before settling on that process, I had I lightly stained some samples and although the stained samples started out looking right, the wood darkened over time, so I suggest if you decide to stain that you be very careful with stain and start out a little light. The stain I used was a mix of diluted Redwood and Mahogany (General).

I have a full gallon of the original stuff if you're anywhere near CT. Sam's won't ship it.

Bob,

If the previous posters aren't interested I might run down to CT to pick it up. Would be happy to pay what you think is reasonable.

I'll take whatever I paid for it. I don't remember the amount, but it was the SAM's price. A friend drove it up from FL for me at no cost, but I wound up using varnish instead of the stain.

You mentioned using bleach. We repaneled our entire salon on the 42C. The Afromosawas veery ligh compared to the original. The person we bought the wood from said just be patient, it will darken with time and match. All we did was coat it w2ith the original stuff listen in our owners manual. It did not take very long and it darkened and matched perfectly. I was told the wood would darken with time and light.

I think it can be shipped ups ground, you can not ship it by air.

I know it can be shipped. The shipper has to put special clips on the lid and double box it. At the time I was trying to order it last year, Sams was not willing (or able) to do so. Maybe they changed their mind since they had an abundance of the stuff and it wasn't doing them any good in the warehouse.

A quart of the "stuff" (what ever IT is - that was the original question) would do just fine for what I need - here in San Francisco. (So, driving to CT, probably not a reasonable thing to try to do.) Steve, Doug, anybody reading at Sams that can ship me a quart? :p
