Hatteras Model
45' CONVERTIBLE-Series II (1984 - 1992)
Reports are that a "52 Hatt" named "QT" burned and sank off near the York River. 6 Souls on board, all taken off by a pair of good samaritan boats safe and sound.

The USCG shows a 53 Hatt, 1986, out of Richmond VA matching that name (doc #900683)

No idea if its the same boat, but it could be.

Glad eveyone's safe!

Add that to the approx 50 foot Hatt that burned next a similar sized Bertram in the Cheboygan, MI river back in 1996 or 7. One of them (I don't which one caught fire first, but both were badly burned) had recently had electrical wiring work performed. The owner was aboard the Hatt I believe and got out thru the emergence hatch in the aft cabin (I believe).

Since diesel doesn't ignite easily, wiring is my first bet.

Too bad...

Actually diesel boats burn more than gas ones explode, according to USCG statistics. Believe it or not....

The problem is the turbochargers and exhaust. They are quite hot and when things go wrong they can get bad FAST.

Interesting how the story ends with the good news that it will make a good fish habitat with "hints" of where this good habitat will be. I guess everything is simply a matter of viewpoint. There are a lot more fishermen than Hatt owners so it's good to know that more people are happy than sad that the boat sunk. ;)

Last fall, we where interested in a 1987 52C that was lin the Ft Lauderdale area. Unfortunately it did not survive Hurricane Wilma. At first we were told the boat was fine, but latter was told she was a total loss. Seems a shame since the boat had been painted, new interior and 400 hrs SMOH. But such is the fate of many boats listed for sale when a storm hits. This one was being sold as part of a divorce settlement and I'm sure the insurance was higher than the boat was being sold for.
