  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
I know this topic has been discussed but if I had a leaking rudder seal on my port rudder and was running in pretty rough conditions in the ocean for 8 hours, could water migrate to below my port engine. 53 MY, thanks, John

I had that issue when running from Oxnard to Stockton in really rough seas. Tightened down the rudder packing and problem solved. I think I vacuumed up 8 gallons from under the engine.

On my boat, the area under the engines is a containment zone. Water from the rudder or shaft packing glands runs thru limber tubes to the center bilge areas. Anything under the engines came from the engines.

Unless it gets high enough to slush over the stringers.

there is a hole in the front and rear of my engine rooms, i put a simple flip type drain plug in each hole, 4 in all now any water under the engines came from there and stays there anything else drains into the aft bilge through limber holes. a lot of water can build up beside the stringers and not make it to the aft pump until you put her in gear and lift the bow some

On my boat those holes are actually a pipe that runs through the engine bilge, ie it connects the bilge in front and behind it, but does not open to the engine bilge itself.......

Mine also oscar, but last spring i found a small hole in that pipe that was letting water in. Almost impossible to find it until i saw a small gyser shoot up while i was cleaning up the waster. A dab of marinetex solved a problem that had me looking for engine leaks.
