  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
70' COCKPIT MY (1988 - 1997)
My lower water tank sending unit was stuck on 3/4 full...ran the tank dry before I saw the issue...I pulled both senders..one normal 20 inch and another 22 inch with a float that is pinned with only about an inch of movement at the bottom of the sender. I assume that it is some sort of alarm letting you know the tank is almost empty. I took an ohm reading on the normal sender and is appeared to be working but stuck in the spot at about 3/4 full. The other unit with only about an inch of movement at the bottom of the sender had no reading at all on the ohm meter. My question is does anyone know the purpose of the longer unit with the pinned float? I don't see that one on the Wema web site.
When replacing them...there is a 100 gal. tank above this 250 gal. tank so the threads need to be sealed very good as not to leak when both tanks are full! Suggestions on what sealent that I should use on the threads to make sure that does'nt happen.

Thanks

I just stopped using the gauges and bought a Watercounter, which tells me exactly, in gallons what is left. Also very helpful in telling you how much different cycles on the dish and clothes washer use, certain lengths of showers, etc. We lived on moorings full time for several months, and tended to anchor out when we cruised extensively, and this was one of the very most useful upgrades we made to the boat. People who liveaboard and don't like to hook up to dock water would benefit from one as well.

We have a Wema sender/gauge and have been veryhappy with its accuracy. But the water counter sounds like a neat/useful thing. As far as sealant - any of the standards will work fine - teflon tape, for example.

No idea about the pinned sender - but I can't imagine what else it could possibly be other than a low level warning. You should be able to trace the wire in any case and find out what it does.
