  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' LRC (1976 - 1981)
Hi all, just another day in the life of a new Hatteras owner. Was filling my 250gl water tank, and it seemed to be taking an extreme amount of time to fill and not a sound out of the overflow.I went below and open the hatch to the gauge and it was full of water, with the meter reading full.Need some help😩 I’m gettin wet here

Are you saying that there was water in the bilge (which the bilge pump should have started to pump out)? It does take longer than you first expect to fill these things. Hard to tell from your post if you overfilled the tank or you just happened to stop when it was full. You can use a flashlight through the side of the tank to see the actual level.

Tell us how you filled the tank. People have been known to crack the tank by putting to much pressure on the tank.

Cracked tanks seem pretty common. I had exactly the same issue on Aslan 5 years ago. Had to shop vac it out. Look and feel where you can for a crack. If you can feel it, you can fix it. I’ll bet it’s at a top corner.

We were filling the tank with a hose on starboard side medium pressure. Every boat I know when the tank wouldBe full water would come out through the vent. We herd it gurgle indicating the tank was getting full but nothing out of the vent, so we continued to fill. Finally after too much time and water, I went to check gauge and found the flood. This a 54 motor yacht and the tank is under floor in captains closet. Will the excess water go into bilge and be taken care of by pumps, or will it have to pumped out?

I have no experience with your model Hatteras. I can tell you on mine there is a void between the tanks and at least one stringer for the spillage to accumulate. That space on my boat will not drain and has to be pumped and/or vac'd out. If you have a similar situation, you may have to get creative snaking a pick-up hose. But, you're going to have to figure out how to get in there anyway to find and correct the source. You might find a DEPSTECH endoscope a handy thing. Good luck.

Check the overflow outlet for clog. Little Critters build all all kinds of nests that might restrict air/water flow. Good luck

Thank you all for chiming in, will let you know it works out😎

Mine leaks from the tank gauge on top. Which I deal with by not filling it all the way.

When we ran the water maker it would leak around the guage/fill plate on the top before it went over the side.

I fill mine all the way because I can get another NK (nano-knot) with the 3,100 pounds weight forward.
