  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
The boat has been sitting for awhile; after a nice run the other day, noticed water in the bilge under the engine, under the shaft log, and ran all the way back to the aft state room to the aft bilge pump...
No noticeable source of the leak....did determine it is sea water.....took the access panel out in the center berth, and the channel was full of water.....I am not sure what that glassed tube is? I suppose the shaft run.....
will watch today again now that all water was pumped out using my portable "puppy" pump.....

1. Not fresh water
2. No drips from engine side of shaft log

Need ideas....thanks, ed

Ideas:
Leaking rudder packing.
Leaking from bolts that hold on the aft spray rail
Leak at raw water pump

Rudder packing is within limits....leak originates forward: when I pumped all the water out from the mid stateroom access area, flow at rear bilge pump stopped....

OK, what is the aft spray rail???

Looked at raw water pump, AC lines etc.......

tnx ed

Check the metal water pipes that connect to the heat exchangers. They have a habit of corroding. I've had to braze mine twice and it's due again when I return from the current trip.

Spray rails are the rails near the waterline at the aft.

Also check all of your exhaust clamps and hoses, all the way back.

If you have dripless shaft seals, might want to check them while at cruise RPM's.

And be very careful when you do. I had leaks of this type on both sides, at the first hose connection to the muffler from the engine exhaust. Took awhile to finally figure it out, only happened when running and then not a lot. Some PO in the past had over tightened the clamps after a halfazz repair attempt and over time the muffler tube was crushed. Became an expensive repair for me, having to buy new exhaust rated fiberglass hose tubes, saw off the old ones, glass in the new ones with very expensive high temp resin, install stainless crush rings in the new ones to prevent ever happening again. Luckily, had boat in area with many boat builders and Hatteras, plus an old Hatteras hand in Bruce Morrison and a very skilled helper who had worked there and Jarrett Bay. A job you really want someone who knows exactly what they are doing involved in, down to the fine points of the right Permatex sealant for the hose (which possibly, coupled with new hose and clamps, yeah all new ones of those, might temporarily solve the issue.

Exhaust collector, water running back up exhaust tube, leaking at collector junction or collector itself, or ditto rudder packing

Well, you guys where right on.......When I looked down at the rudder post, from the top, "looked"
ok...BUT, when we moved the mattress off the corner bed, and exposed the gland, it was a sizeable
leak....BUT, I never thought it would flow all the way up to the engine room !!
Once we tightened the 2 rudder nuts, all is well......
