  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' YACHT FISHERMAN (1970 - 1981)
In my 58YF there is a small square hatch in the mid guest head that always seem to have some water in it. Can anyone tell me what's under there? Where can this water be coming from? Would there be water on the port side as well and how do I get to the port side if this is the case.

I always had water in the bilge below the mid stateroom. Always at random I mite add. Finally got that one figured out; some of bubbas handiwork. Turns out it was the drain from the sink in the wet bar in the upper salon directly above.

Sooo. enter the stateroom locker. Notice ENLARGED hatch in the floor.

Step into the locker and pull the panel off behind the airtank

and find the drain hose to the seachest leaking due to a POOR install. C'mon now bubba; to many BUDs at lunch???

the hatch on my 58yf in the mid head is for access to the toilet water intake seacock. its way under there

Can this water be coming from the packing on the starboard shaft? If it is the toilet inlet seacock, what would be the best way to get to it to check or tighten or change

it could be the packing. these boats lean fwd, if you have the aft engine room plug in it will stop the water from making it to the engine room. how much water(depth) is there? if the plug is in the engine room, the water will build up until it can flow through one of the aft limber holes into the aft bilge. is it there after you run the boat? during a run, the water will flow to the back, and into the aft bilge

It actually seems to be filling while at the dock. This is happening very slowly and may reach 3 inches of water in this compartment every 4-7 days. The boat is very new to us and was delivered to us after a 650 mile journey. we have not run it since since we are doing work to her and upgrading. We noticed it while going through the boat, bailed it and then a week later it was full again.

Is this the scene of the crime??? ws

Lay on the floor and insert your arm up to the armpit and you MITE be able to touch it! Of course bubba majored in basketball at college so ya know his arms are 40" long...

Now ya see it , now ya dont. The new hatch is a piece of plywood on the floor is just forward of the old hatch, and above the seacock. FWI... that head is no longer a head.

Is the shore water connected and turned on the whole time? When the seachest was leaking on mine, Id bale it out and shop vac it dry and gain 2 inches overnight; that is if I used the wetbar drain.
On another note... are you running any AC? Could merely be a condensate drain plugged up as well... ws

Actually I am running the a/c and I will check that as well. No shore water connected so I can possibly rule that out. Can I ask, in the pics, what is the area formally the mid toilet now used as.

Seeing that I am only 5'5" tall it may be a challenge getting to that seacock without disassembling everything......damn you Bubba =)

Salt water or fresh water? You can taste it or boil a tablespoon-full away. See if it leaves a deposit.

If fresh, could be a slow leak from the sink faucet or drain, or same from shower faucet or drain. I get a bit of drainage from behind a shelf in my shower which accumulates splashes.

I think all this moisture accumulates when we are docked. Then when we depart, get to sea, and speed up and get on plane it all drains into my very shallow aft bilge, setting off the alarm. There is maybe 2-3-or 4 gallons total. I need to find the source so I can put an Arid Bilge pickup there and eliminate the problem.

sounds like it is the rudder packing, if you dont pump it out, does it keep getting deeper? or is it filling to that level, and then leaking through the limber hole into the aft bilge area, and being pumped out..with the boat leaning fwd, and the limber hole drilled a little bit off of the bottom, that area will fill up before going through the limber hole.

Thats why I have a habit of de-bubba-izing things on the boat. I absolutely will not hesitate to take the skilsaw to the floor or a wall and cut a new access hatch or panel for MY convenience, not bubbas! Thats one problem with production boats.
Grab a stogie and a 6 pack and read some of the long winded threds I ran about remodeling. I removed both of the starboard side aft heads and turned the fwd into a single bunk room and the aft into a dressing room. The master closet got the fwd bulkhead moved 18" forward and its now a king sized crapper w/shower. The mid stateroom is now a tool room. I may still swap the single and tool room back as I dont need that much tool space anymore.
Cant imagine bubba in those tiny crappers after a crawfish gumbo dinner!

We also get water in this space periodically and have been trying for over two years to figure out where it comes from. We have confirmed that it is freshwater and therefore not from a leaking rudder or shaft packing. I don't think it is from a shower drain hose because it is always clear and never has any soapy appearance. I've found no leaks in the potable water lines. These things dry you nuts!

The two places that I have had fresh water leaks are:

1) Portholes

2) Spray rail (it leaked when it rained)

I caulked both and all has been dry since.

On my 58YF had the same problem. Turned out it was a rotted out tail piece on the shower drain and the accumulated water in fact drained forward towards the engine room. Of course that was easier for me to figure out as we are live aboards and shower regularly so there was soap in the water.

You have said no fresh water hooked to the boat, but is your pressure water pump turned on? Leaking shower head and rotten tail piece would give you clean water in the bildge under the head deck.

If it is the tail piece, the fix is difficult indeed.

You could try some food coloring in the shower to check if it is the drain.

Great idea thank you. I will try this and let you know how it goes and what I find.
