What is the best route to get from Washington NC to the Atlantic.
Going to head south for a couple weeks, looking for the best route/inlet to get in the ocean to head for
St. Simmons Island for a week.

Unless you've some some special considerations, ICW to Beaufort, NC then outside. Pretty much straight south.

Would you run goose creek down to the neuss river or run around the point into Pamlico sound and then
into the neuss. Which route is faster to beaufort?

Thanks,

scott

Others here will know better. I'm a poor blowboater, so it's ICW and prayers for me.

Scott,

What type boat do you have?

Agree on Beaufort inlet, by far the fastest route. Whether you go the ICW or the sound depends on the weather and wind direction.
I prefer the sound, a stopover in Ocracoke and/or South River breaks up the trip nicely.
How fast can you / do you want to go?

We are in a Hatteras 52c
Going fastest route from Washington to Beaufort, one day trip.

Thanks,

Run the Sound. It'll be faster then staying in the canals. The sound is a few more miles but you can cruise the whole time. If you were in a slow Motoryacht the canal is fine but in a fast boat if you get stuck behind a slow boat you'll wish you went around. That's my thoughts anyway.

Beaufort is your best bet and ICW through Hobucken is the clear choice. 14NM shorter than going around WR2 at the end of Brant Island shoal (I would not use the Slough with any boat over 20 feet.) and with the exception of "downtown" Hobucken and the CG station you can get up and run the whole way. Also virtually no traffic this time of year. With the exception of a couple of miles either side of the Core Creek bridge you can run the whole way.

Interesting, has it changed that much in the last 2 or three years?

If it's not passable now then you are 100% right, although if there is traffic in the canals and creeks, barreling through there is usually not appreciated or polite.
Might be worth getting some up to date local knowledge from the CG or Towboat, or the commercial guys who used to use it a lot.
