I should note the boat will be in and around Annapolis through the winter.

Hence, the larger heated salon on the cockpit motoryacht vs the others, would seem to make the most sense, gallery up or down.

none of the above! it's all about picking the right compromises... :-)

Yes Pascal, that is what I am trying to figure out!!! <gg>

Still strongly leaning towards the cockpit motoryacht, since it maxs the on board heated space, plus other stuff I like. I will be keeping my gofast and managed to climb aboard a 58 cockpit motoryacht from my boat rafted to it, on the 58 cat walk. So lack of a walk around is no big thing for me, if I kin do that. <gg>

Now, galley up or down, that is a very confusing decision to make. I am interested to see what the readers here think, hence the poll. Great advice so far.

I have a 53ED which is essentially a 58CMY without the cockpit. It is a great northern boat as it has the large salon which is climate controlled. The only thing we really would like is better access to the water which the cockpit provides.

I have asked the Admiral if she is glad that we bought a 53ED instead of a 53MY with the nice back deck. Her comment was that there is no way that she would give up the large salon for a back deck. Then, of course, she says that she would rather have both. I guess that means either a 58MY series I or an 18' beam MY. Just remember, every boat is a compromise.

Sky, have you ever wanted a walk around deck ie yachtfish when docking? Have you found it annoying to have people passing through the pilothouse to get to the top deck? Would you prefer having the galley up, or do you prefer the larger salon and dinette downstairs on your boat? How is the visibility when docking?

I voted for the 60' sportfish. I don't really think it will make a better dock queen liveaboard, but I own one............hey, ya gotta cheer for the home team!

If it's coming down to "galley up or galley down", that's sort of a no-brainer. Go read the posts on replacing the refrigerators in the galley down models. Nightmares, mostly. With galley up, you have none of those headaches. The only tough swap out on the galley up is the washer/dryer (just did that yesterday) and the hot water heater, but all of them, galley up and down, 53MY, 58YF, etc. have the laundry below the main deck. I don't know how others' are set up, but I've got a 40 gallon water heater on this 58MY, and it doesn't fit through the doors. So, that was an evil replacement for me; already did that too.

At this point, I've lived onboard this 58MY long enough to make me look beyond just what part of the boat I'll use the most and focus on those other things that often get lost in the excitement of the new boat purchase, like how are we going to get the engines, appliances, etc. out when they go belly up?

Still, it's all about your intentions and expectations of the boat. I voted 58 YachtFish, even though I have a 58MY galley up. The question to which I was reponding was in regards to a liveaboard vessel. If I were just looking to have a liveaboard for my own personal use, then it would be the 58YF, hands down. For me, the geographic location would not change my choice whether I lived up north or in the tropics. I chose my 58MY with charter purposes in mind and needed 4 staterooms in a boat under 60'. The choice for me was one model, period, and as a result, I had nothing to really fret over in terms of which model. In my opinion, the salon of the 58YF is plenty big.

Humm, well the cockpit motoryacht also can be had with 4 staterooms, and galley up as per your motoryacht. But, if I recall the master stateroom in your boat is mucho bigger with tub, than the cockpit motoryacht sans tub.

What was it that made the motoryacht more practical for charter vs the cockpit motoryacht?

Walkaround decks are not necessary when docking so that has never been a problem. As far as the ladder being in the PH, I like that. It only takes me a few seconds to move from one helm station to the other. The galley down is nice because you get the dinette and a larger salon. As I said before, the only drawbacks are the smaller back deck and (for me) no cockpit.

Availability. Have you ever seen a 4SR, galley up cockpit motoryacht? Hatteras made only a few (by comparison to the 58YF and 53MY) of these 58MY and 58CPMY, Series I, (I think about 35 of them is my recollection for the 58MY) and while a 4SR was shown as an option in the brochure, I have to wonder if any were ever really made and if so, whether they are still in existence. I hunted long and hard and never came across a 58CPMY, galley up, 4SR - never laid eyes on one nor have I ever seen a listing. That's not to say they don't exist, but they are even more rare than the 58MY.

Ang, there is a 58 galley up CMY in stuart on yachtworld. Hence my question.<gg>

Cool!!! Wish there had been some out there during the years I was shopping.

The poll looks like a horse race right now, with the galley down CMY ahead by a nose.

As Luckydave said, I have to vote for the home team. Also, once inside, it's only one set of stairs to worry about going up and down.

I voted for 58CMY galley down even though I love my 58YF for my use. The extra salon size of the 58CMY far outweighs the walkarounds in my mind for a full time liveaboard. I like galley down due to the extra privacy in the salon. Nice to watch movies, etc without dishes and pots banging around while cooking too. Galley up if you really need a couple of extra bunks, but otherwise galley down offers another area to use. We often have 6-8 people in the galley down during parties and it's nice to have a "separate" area from the salon and the other areas. It makes the boat seem bigger. You only have to replace the refrigerator every 15-20yrs, so that shouldn't be a deciding factor on such a huge purchase IMHO.

Once again, it's all about personal preferences and compromises. They are all great boats!

Gotta go with the 60 enclosed bridge. Not only does it give the option to really fish ( What Hatteras' were originally made to do) but the enclosed bridge is seperated so you ca look at it a a place to escape to.

I have been poking around for a couple weeks, looking at 53's, 58's, 61's Hats.. I have come to the conclusion that for me, being a liveaboard with a wife and a dog, having a fishing background, that the 58YF with the galley up would be the thing for me. You turn the downstairs dinnette into a desk/ office. Trouble is they are very few and far between. The one in Stuart is absolutly hideous to me in that painted white look. :( Can't do it.
Looked at a 63 Viking Motor yacht (Interesting, large cockpit with galley up and no lower helm.) yesterday, the wife took two steps in, looked around and said "It sure isnt a Hatteras! ha! What a girl.... It paled in comparision to the Hatts we have seen. Now, that 61 MY is a hell of a livaboard, if i could figure how to get the dog to the dingy....

Cheers..

Captned, I did not know that Hatt ever made a 58YF with galley up. I know they did in the 58CMY (no walkaround) but I have never seen a 58YF or a 53MY for that matter with a galley up, only the 53ED and 58CMY and 58MY. Could you possibly post a link to the one in Stuart so that I can see? THANKS!
