I ve read that they had issues with loosing power a few days before and had to be towed back in. It has been rough down here the whole week with 30kts and 8-10’ seas. Not the best weather to run offshore… yes a Viking 92 can take it but no safety margin in case if a problem

And again it makes you wonder about not having bow rails. Imagine having to go to the bow to manually release the anchor. I wonder if they had an electric windlass or hydraulic which is somewhat likely on a boat that size.
If they lost hydraulic the only way to release the anchor is manually at the bow… good luck going there with no rail in 8 footer.

Both engines and both generators inop? they have fuel source in common, but what else?

Supposedly the fire system had a fault shutting both engines down. Anchor winch was hydraulic running off one of the engines.

There's an override for that. Windlass should also have a second means of deployment. It makes no sense unless the captain didn't know what he's doing.

Finally got her off the beach yesterday around 3pm. Had to pump the fuel out to lighten her up. Lots of questions. Wonder who ends up with the boat? What are the rules for salvage, insurance etc…

Was probably another mail order 100 ton master baiter the schools guarantee any idiot can become a captain

I have never heard of a fire system override not working but who knows. Could also have been an issue in the interface between the fire system and the MTUs. When I took over the 116, the Seafire system had not been inspected in a while and when we tested the shutdowns, it only killed the gens and the blowers bit the MTUs. I had to get an MTU electronic specialist to trace the wiring and get it to work… took him a while. Now both shutdown and override are tested every year during the fire system inspection.

You d be surprised how many boats I ve seen with fire systems not inspected in years

Releasing the anchor manually isn’t always easy especially on a macho sport fish with no railing. On a boat that size there is likely a brake on the windlass that need to be released in addition to the lock. Then you need to find the wrench or bar to release the clutch. And pray that the weight of the anchor is enough to let it free fall. Not a given… don’t ask how I know.

Not that it would have made a difference but I doubt Viking built that boat with a single hydraulic pump…

With the length of time and wave action happening I'm surprised it didn't sink further into the sand. Pretty impressive bow cleat!

Any idea where they towed her, and how much damage to the bottom etc?

Friend told me it went to the Viking facility in Riviera Beach, Viking usually likes to hide boats with issues but it's going to be hard to hide a 92'.

I be seen pictures of the haul out, rudders are bent and paint on the keel has been sanded clean…. No water came in and no visible damage to the wheels and shafts but you can’t tell from a picture.

I suspect the reason they towed it by the bow is that is likely to be the (structurally) strongest tow point and that trying to take it off stern first might have ripped the back off the boat.

Also alot of wave action into to the exhausts, very possible engine damage.
