  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
45' CONVERTIBLE-Series II (1984 - 1992)
Hmmmm, come on Hatteras, keep up. This looks like a nice design, Cockpits on Motoryachts are a must for me and wouldn't really want one without it. It not only make the yacht much more functional, but I think it looks better as well. I hear they have a 93 and a 100 in the design stages as well.

Don't know if anyone saw the current issue of "Valhalla". It's Vikings in house Publication, which you can pull up as a pdf file on their website. There is an article in it which is a good read. It talks about the Luxury Tax era and how it bankrupted many marine companies and almost bankrupted Viking Yachts in 1993. I didn't realize Viking Yachts was in as bad of shape as they were. Makes their current success that much more impressive. Very interesting for anyone who enjoys reading about the yachting industry.

Anyway here is the link to the 82 CPMY

I recall hearing at the time that Viking was bankrolled for a while by MAN engines, who provided powerplants on credit to them to keep them going- possibly funds as well. Anyone know if this is true or just talk? They have certainly done well since then, I have to say.

It was suggested to Mann provided financing for some buyers. Do not recall who told me.

I agree with the cockpit as a must!

I think the cockpit motoryacht is a niche market as it is really only needed for fishing.

For swimming, diving, hanging around in the Bahamas a big swim platform, with rails is just fine and that's what most MY buyers will want.

Hatteras simply doesn't understand the need of a big aft deck and platform on a MY. It's really a shame as they basically invented the small motoryacht thanks to the Hargrave designs of the 70s. Nowadays, no hatteras MY offers a decent aft deck and platform and they are loosing customers because of this.

like many here I obviously can't afford a new or recent 70-90 motoryacht :) but i ve had three customers so far who simply looked at hatteras and passed because of the lack of aft deck and platform. A few weeks ago I started working with a client who wanted something in th 80-90 range and 3 to 6 year old. Top of my list was the 80' hatteras skylounge but somehow I knew that wasn't go work because of the ridiculously small swim platform and aft deck...I couldn't even get the guy to look at the boat and they re now about to close on an 84 Lazzara skylounge. It's not a hatt but it s a pretty nice boat with a plenty of outdoor room to enjoy the Bahamas....

I understand there is market for more interior space, especially up north, but I really wish hatteras would offer some of the models with a large aft deck. Results speak for themselves and when you see how many mutts, ferrettis, princess, ocean Alexander, horizons, fairlines, etc you see out there vs hatteras I just don't understand why they don't get it.

I agree 1000% that a boat needs a big aft deck. There is nothing better then being out back in the shade, with the breeze blowing through for being able to enjoy the water and all it's views. I do think the cockpit is more then just a Niche market though, and it's important to more then just people who fish. I think if you have children or grandchildren it's important also because it offers more protection to keep them from accidentally falling overboard while hanging out closer to the water. Or if you are swimming or snorkeling you can throw your water toys in there, stuff like rafts, flippers, life jackets, etc while you rinse and dry off on the platform without a worry about a rocking boat or a wave washing the stuff overboard. Plus it gives you one more place on the boat to sit along the side and hang out in the sun near the water.

As with anything I see the pros and cons to both a cockpit with a swim platform, and just a platform, but I think the cockpit has many more pros. One pro to a cockpit aside from enjoyment is crew and vessel safety being able to enter an aft engine room door while underway. I would walk into the cockpit of the boat and enter the engine room while cruising at 25 knots. But I would never walk onto the swim platform of a Non-Cockpit boat to enter the engine room while underway. I think if you slipped you could too easily fall over board. Then if that aft door by the engine room is open and the Captain all of a sudden slows the boat you could easily swamp the engine and crew compartment. Now if there's a cockpit all those concerns become increasingly less, to almost not a concern at all.

Either way both are nice, I just prefer the cockpit not only for fishing, but for a safer way to access the water. Just plain Looks better in my eyes also.

I agree a cockpit is a wonderful feature, but unless you fish, the modern euro style platforms provide EVERY convenience needed. I also agree that nothing is better than an afternoon sea breeze in the shade of a roomy aft deck.

I also heard that Hatteras only has 2 boats currently in production. A 90 Motor Yacht and a 100 Motor Yacht.

Design teams need to actually use boats.

Only two in production? That's odd, I believe I "Heard" somewhere they've sold 27 Boats. Sounds high though, maybe I'm wrong. I'll have to check into that.

Hi Captyf. A friend of mine knows the guy who is building the 90. He told my friend he was shocked to only see 2 boats in production while visiting the factory last month. That's what I heard. Not verified. Are the sportfish models built elsewhere? How about the rebranded Cabo's?

Viking is doing several things right these days.

The big aft deck is what really makes the series I 48MY. My PO added an oversize swim platform and it works just fine.

Mann and a few Local NJ businessmen kept them afloat during that time
