  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
45' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1968 - 1975)
Could you guys straighten me out on these terms and how they apply:

1. Gross Tonnage
2. Net Tonnage
3. Displacement

:)

Gross tonnage is a measure of volume, not weight. Gross tonnage is the volume of enclosed space in the boat where one gross ton = 100 cu. ft. So a 10' X 10' X 10' is equal to 1,000 gross tons.

Net tonnage is the same thing but only the space designed to hold cargo or passengers. It excludes crew space, engine and mechanical space, etc.

Displacement is the actual weight of your boat. It is the same as the weight of water that would fill the space below the waterline, so it displaces the same weight of water that it weighs.
