  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
60' MOTOR YACHT (1987 - 1989)
The saddest sound...is NOT hearing "whooooooosh" when ya step on the flusher handle. The v-berth head, drains slowly, but doesn't "suck it up (down?)" - as the case may be.

B4 I go digging out the manual, (and please, gods, let that be the *only* thing I need to go digging out) I figured I'd ask....

So, Oh Wise and Learned Ones, what might it be?

Is the breaker on, power going to the pump?

If one tries to "flush" too much at once, the narrow opening, just under the sliding bottom can get "jammed". I use a strong cloths hanger to open the offending obstruction...not glamorous, but gets the job done... Check the CB first, but if the pump is not running, and you have power, most likely an obstruction that maintains the vacuum between the pump and that..."obstruction. Usually that obstruction is in the narrow opening. These things work great 99% of the time.

VF are easy to troubleshoot but like anythign, go step by step.

first, is the pump running ?
if not it could be...
- something (too much TP) stuck at the bottom of the the head,. in the ventury, clearly visible when you hold the pedal down... that means the vacuum isnt' broken and the pump doens't turn on. A wire as suggest may help although if you push something down, it might get stuck further down the line...
-circuit breaker, check for power at the pump.
- vac switch. if you have a separate cylindrical vac tank, the switch is at one end. they cannot be adjusted, but you can try pulling the spring out to see if the pump starts.

if the pump is running, having no vacum (including haivng water draining down slowly) is usually caused by something cloggin one of the duck bill valves.

where to look depend on your system. do you have a separate vac tank and pump or one the compact all in one unit ?

usually the duckbills will be at the pump inlet and outlet and stuff usually gets stuck a the unlet. it's easy to unscrew and clear but just be ready for "things" to leak when you open it up.

if you have a single pump for 2 heads, you will also have a duck bill valve, inline, between each vac tank and the pump. if you have enough slack in the hose, shaking the valve/hose often clears the clog.

if your valves are over 4 or 5 years, you may want to replace them when you open them up, they're cheap.. older valves often start causing issues which gets worst with time.

another thing to try to clear a clog, is a plunger. I know some people say that it's a big no no as it could damage/reverse the duck bills, it's never happened to me and a plunger as saved me from opening the duck bills for minor problems.

over all, VF are trouble free and very forgiving... i use regular TP on the boat and rarely have any issues in any of the 3 heads.

If the pump is running and you have no vacumm, one of the duckbills is probably got something stuck in it (probably a mouse), the easiest way to clear it is to have the tank pumped, be sure to plug the vent so that the pumpout station vacumm will pull all the way to the toilet and step on the pedal when they pull a vacumm on the tank. It should suck the obstruction through. You can do this also with a shop vac. If one of the duckbills gets an obstruction it will not close and the one way valve action stops and the diaphram pump will not pump.

Note: Be careful with how much vacumm you put on the holding tank when doing this, you can collapse the tank.

Breakers were on...
Plunger didn't ork...

Shoving (gently) a hanger wire down the pipe worked wonders....

Thanks, all.

Glad the KISS approach worked...but boy did I get some great info from this group as always on other potential, and most likely future challenges. Didn't that "woosh" feel good once you cleared the offending object? Amazing how the little victories with these wonderful boat bring great pleasure. Great boats, great website.

Mine was only filling up the bowl and not exiting one time and the offender was a cigarette butt in the duckbill that the plunger wouldn't remove.
