  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
In a recent thread, I was asking for some input on installing new heads on the boat, and Sea Eric posted a picture where he utilized some of the space on the outer edge of the salon. behind the wood, and it made me wonder if anyone else has done something similar, what it could be a good space for, etc...

We have cubby holes on one side and a sliding doored shelf on the other side, as well as a cabinet with an extra DC panel.

For instance, on the wet bar, the shelves are only about 4 inches deep, but the wet bar is built in front of the wall, and behind that space is at least another foot of room.

Anyone ever do anything more with this space? Rebuild the shelving for deeper storage or tuck a washing machine half under there or something else?

I regret this is the best picture I have (not being aboard), but there are three compartments that run under my port side deck. One is wood faced seen under the desktop with stool in front; another is the black front that formally held a prehistoric subwoofer. The third (behind the chair) used to house a hundred pounds of stereo equipment. There, I made a black fronted front panel that matched the speaker front adjacent. The compartments are roughly 18”, 24” and 30” wide x 18” high and about 24” deep. They make dandy parts storage areas. I painted all exposed wood with epoxy which served to eliminate an old musty plywood smell. There were some wire bundles from the ER that I foamed as well for drafts. Could do shelving inside but don’t want to lose flexibility options.

I am contemplating moving my salon AC unit to the space in the wall on the port side of the salon. It looks like the right configuration would fit and the current 12k BTU unit is a miserable installation in a cabinet. It would be easier to start over than to fix it, plus I really think 16k BTU would be the appropriate size.

The other space I'm eying is beside the refrigerator where the current CO2 fire extinguisher tank is located. I'd put Fireboy units in the engine room. I'm calculating how many cases of box wine I could fit in that space.

Our 16btu air handler is in the starboard salon wall. Plenty of room in there.

It seems like it is most just empty space behind the paneling.

Be sure to keep one thing in mind...

Just keep in mind that the space inside that "wall" on the 43DC models is also the fresh air plenum for the engine rooms - you don't want to restrict too much of that air flow!

Yes! This ^ You beat me to it.

Yes, okay, this is the kind of stuff I was wondering, basically.

I have seen pictures where the cabinet configurations are very different and some I like better than others.
