  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' EXTENDED DECKHOUSE (1983 - 1988)
Thinking about replacing my Big Frigidaire with a new Under Counter Fridge/Freezer with pull out drawers. There are now several manufacturers. It would simplify the installation and add counter space in the galley of my 53ED.
Has anyone done this??? Any suggestions most welcome.
Thanks
Ted

Not a fan of the drawer units. First you need to figure out what a drawer that weighs 3 million pounds packed with food is going to do when the boat rolls and pitches. Then the idea of pulling out all your food and surrounding it with warm air every time you open it to get something makes no sense to me. Finally think about this, I was on a series2 60c running 30kts offshore. I pulled the drawer open while I'm trying to hold on with the other hand. That left no hands to grab the soda. I let go my grip on the boat to snatch the soda and the drawer full of sodas beer and a gallon of OJ slammed shut on my fingers to add insult to injury the soda can burst and shot coke all over me the counter and the headliner. No I'm not a fan of drawer units!

I like them. When you open a regular fridge the cold air escapes downward but when you open a drawer it probably stays in

I ve used both style in rough water and I prefer the drawer as stuff won't be sliding off the shelves

Pricey though...

I don't care for the drawers either. They provide more counter space, but in the end, you lose cabinetry. That may be okay in a huge galley on a 70 footer, but most of our boats don't have the room.

When you look at price and serviceability, it's hard to beat a standard household refer.

The undercounter fridge is a space creator as it takes up much less room the the upright models. Yes bungee cords are required while underway, but I had to lock down the upright as well.
We are very happy with this arrangement.

Really? How many cubic feet of storage are in those units?

Thanks for the great picture. Looks first class!!! What brand did you choose and has it been trouble free?

The unit is all refridgerator, we have a freezer on the back deck. It is an 10 cubic foot Electrolux and has run flawlessly. The large soda containers sit upright in both drawers no problem.

I have a 58' galley up.

I replaced my full size fridge/freezer with the drawer unit. I believe it was a kitchenaid. I removed the icemaker since I had the ULine in back of salon which opened up more freezer space. I put in a new stove top, a combo micro/convection oven, new counters, replaced all the old doors with new doors (kept the face frames and cabs) and added larger, new cabinetry overhead (where the old fridge/freezer was) because I was able to bring the cabinetry down since the full unit was removed. 90% of the time it is just me and the admiral, but when we had another couple the fridge/freezer space was limited. So, I pulled the dishwasher and put in another identical unit right beside the current unit. Couldn't be happier. Plenty of room. The dishwasher really wasn't used that much, most was by hand anyway and while on the hook, we never used the dishwasher- too much water usage. Worked out well for us.

Besides, when someone asks me what! No dishwasher? I just point to the admiral :D

My old GE fridge freezer is pretty much done and when it fails I ve been thinking about a drawer fridge for my 53. It woudl actually open up more counter space, more floor space and also more cabinetry. On the 53, there is a big closet in the forward stateroom right by the galley which would be perfect for a freezer at the bottom with the all in one washer dryer above.

Any pictures of the finished job you can send along would be appreciated. Maybe send pictures of the Admiral too to I can show my wife.....

I'll be back on boat on 19th. Will snap a few then and share with group.

I guess their ok if the boat never moves
