Hatteras Model
48' YACHT FISHERMAN (1972 - 1975)
I am looking for any recommendations on an under counter drawer type refrigerator and freezer units. The ones I have seen so far are rediculous prices, but I want this type of unit, and if there are no other choices I will have to pay for them. But, I am looking for input and possible brands that you may know about. I really like the stainless models.

Thanks! :)

Sub Zero are what are used by the factory now. I haven't heard anything bad about them other than they are a bit pricey. U-line also make a drawer model that may be a little cheaper... but you know that cheaper isn't always better. Well, you knew that because you own a Hatteras :)

just to chime in....I have a buddy who owns a company that does high-end kitchen remodeling in S. Florida and told me that Sub-Zero products are NOT worth the price and are subject to many problems. So I went to Consumer Digest and looked them up.....Consumer Digest agrees...."great designs poorly built" For what it is worth!!

When I recently replaced my galley I looked at both the Sub-Z's and U-line, I ended up going with Summit. They make matching stainless steel undercounter fridge and deep freezers(-25F). These have doors like normal appliances and are designed to be installed "built in" at 1/3 the cost of drawers, plus you get more room and can stand milk bottles upright. I'm very happy so far.

I JUST DID MINE I'LL TRY TO GET YOU A PICTURE ( SUNDAY )IN THE BACK DECK AND I WENT WITH SUMMIT THEY WERE 24 INCH WIDE EACH AND STAINLESS AND VENTED AIR UNDER UNIT SO IT WAS GREAT FOR UNDER COUNTER THERE IS TWO COMPRESOR OPTIONS AND THEY RAN ME $ 800.00 PER UNIT. ;) 1.3 AMPS ,AND THE OLD UNIT WAS A 18 INCH SCOTSMAN FRIDGE PULLING 1 AMP AND I HAD AN UGLY CHEAPO SQUARE TOP FILL FREEZER PULLING LIKE 3 AMPS. PROBLEM WITH TOP ENTRY IS THE CLEANING PART (SQUID GUTTS  )THE SUMMITS ARE EASY TO CLEAN :)

I will check out the summit units. The Sub-zero stuff is sexy, but a little gold plated, if I was doing a multi-million yacht, what the hell, what is another $8k? I work too hard for my money, so I just need something good.

thanks for everyone's input.

cheers!

Chris
Here Are The Pictures I Promised . The Work Is Still Under Way And The Cbinets Are Only Primer Painted And It Getts A Slab Of Granite Over It With A Sink In The Middle , But You Should Be Able To Be Some Ideas . One More Picture To Come... :)

Those are the same units that I have on my boat. I'm happy with them for the most part, but the refrig does seem to vary in temp quite a bit from the top shelf to the bottom shelf. Also, if cans/bottles touch the back wall inside the refrig, they will freeze and break. That has happened twice. Grrrr.

The drawer units that I think Boss Lady was interested in are actual drawers that are refrigerated. I have seen various manufacturers and lots of prices, all high. Boater's World had a decent price on the web that you may want to check out. http://www.boatersworld.com/product...n-cockpit;cigalley;cirefrigerators-ice-makers

We must have good taste Eric, but i didn't like the drawers I'm afraid they may open in rough seas and again like the top mount it will be hard to clean , you would have to sponge out a mess unless the drawers come out.
where are you chris , was this helpfull :)

This is a picture of a hat I almost made an offer on , it has the drawer type freezer in the gally where they removed the dinnette.

Thanks Carl! I will have to see if the swing door units will work in my galley, if not Summit does make a multi-drawer unit (3 drawers) that is similiar to the Sub-zero units, and is value priced. I think Summit will be the best solution.

I replaced a Sub zero and a U-Line swinging door units with 2 U-Line drawer units and am super happy with them. 2 years old now. Never had any luck with the Sub Zero stuff at all, at home and on board. The 7 year old U-Line is keeping things chilled in the garage while the 3 year old SZ went to the dump with the rest of the garbage.

What's the attraction of drawer fridges? When we were looking at Hatts, we saw some with them, (cut down galleys) and the Admiral said "No way I'm bending over and crawling on the deck to use the fridge, this is stupid."
I had to agree with her. I'm 6'2" and don't want to crawl on my hands and knees either.

I am closer to the floor than you already, and if I get real drunk I can still get another beer without having to get off the floor. Try that with a full size refrigerator. LOL

Eric
you are correct I went to check the boat :p and all beers touching the rear wall where frozen I had to pull them 1 inch off the back , but much like chris I was able to do it with one hand while still on the floor :D

LOL, it looks like Sub Zero rates right up there with ONAN for suitable candidates for the landfill/junkyard. Hey, Carl, I only have to get my own beer , if the Galley Slave passes out before I do!

Hay I got my granit installed today finnaly...just in time for the CDR ;) the granit guy was cheap but I wanted 2 cm not 3 cm so its a little thick and heavy for the boat it weighs like 300 lbs and the 2 cm I think would have been 100lbs lighter :( this boat keeps getting heavier :(
