BRUNSWICK, Ga. -
The Coast Guard says a man and his cat are safe after they were rescued from a sinking sailboat off the Georgia coast.

Kevin Savage and his cat, Tommy Girl, were sailing 38 miles off the coast from Brunswick when their boat, Maggie, began taking on water as the ocean was whipped by gusty winds. Coast Guard officials say the conditions automatically activated an emergency radio beacon aboard the 37-foot sailboat Friday morning.

The Coast Guard launched a helicopter rescue crew from its station in Savannah. The crew hoisted Savage and his cat from the sinking boat. Neither were injured.

Cmdr. Gregory Fuller, commander of Coast Guard Air Station Savannah, says the rescue shows that ocean-going boats of any size should be equipped with emergency radio beacons.
And this one off Georgia...

Slow news days in JAX? A live report to cover a beached boat...

Couple of weeks ago coming back from the Exumas I assisted a dimasted sailboat at Northwest channel although the assistance was more psychological than anything else as they had drifted over the shoals where I couldnt get. It was a 38 footer but centerboard with a 2' draft. I stayed nearby for about an hour while they cut the rigging and cleared the prop and left when they were able to motor off the shoals. It was even too rough to launch the tender...

Nice older couple, they made it back to Miami a couple of days later and i ran into them again... They built the boat themselves (aluminum) 17 years ago, already circumnavigated once, just to dimast 12 miles from chub!

Stuff happens

I liked the part about " the prop was crusted with barnacles and could not move us" !!
IDIOT!

Pascal, that explains the circles that Charmer put on MarineTracker; I was convinced you lost your tender and had to retrieve it. :-) Thanks for being a good sam! Karma happens.

Yep that was it!

The tender is on the top deck so if loose it there wouldn't be much worth picking up ;)

The track probably shows attempt to get on the back side of the shoals in case they had drifted across or had to abandon ship. It s frustrating being helpless but even on the bank it was too rough to anchor and launch the tender.

I talked to another boat (80 MY) that was passing eastbound and towing a center console... First he responded and said he was going to send one of his crew in the cc. He never stopped, kept on going.
