Has any of you gentlemen purchased turbo exhaust blankets recently for a DD8V71TI's? Today I priced these blankets from Marine Exhaust of Alabama at $2,116 and Marine Exhaust, Riviera Beach FL. at $840 for four turbo and four elbow blankets. Why that big of a difference in price? Is it in the quality or other factors? Your collective winsdom will be greatly appreciated.

I purchased some Exhaust elbows from the Fla company. They are top Notch!!! I know nothing of the other company.

I'd buy from Marine Exhaust in Riviera Beach. They fabricated an entire exhaust system for me from the turbochargers back for my boat a couple of years ago and to say they did a STUNNING job would be the understatement of the year. (And - whoever buys Gig gets the new system already on her! :) )

I also purchased replacement blankets from them for the hotpipes and turbos at that time - they're showing wear as does everything on a boat, but are holding up well.

I had a quote from a place in Alabama (not sure who tho so I won't hazard a guess) for a replacement exhaust system when mine needed doing and their price was MUCH higher than Marine Exhaust.

There are two competing companies in Florida that do this work - Marine Exhaust and Deangelo (the former in Riviera Beach, the latter in Ft. Lauderdale) I own work by one and have seen work by the other on several boats - both do top-drawer work and I'd have no qualms about using EITHER. Both quoted comparably; Marine Exhaust got the work mostly due to their ability to meet my delivery leadtime requirements (Deangelo was more backed up at the time)

I just purchased 4 Blankets and Elbows from Marine Exhuasts in Riviera they were excellent to deal with and like Genesis indicated they were a liitle under 900.00 so far they are holding up fine. The blankets that I replaced were also from Riveria and I bought them with the boat I am not sure if they were originals. I have a 1987 45C 6v92 my suggestion is Marine Exhausts. Now I was also told that Marine exhausts do not manufacture them and that they buy from a company in Fort Lauderdale. I was at Marine Exhausts and I did not see them manufacturing Blankets as I did see them manufacturing marine exhausts. Good Luck. You may want to check with Ed at sams in FL. He may be able to direct you to the manufacturer. Good Luck Gina Marie

Anyone know of a reputable source for turbo blankets up here in New Jersey?
I'm looking to replace the ones on my 1271ti's on my 1980 60' Sportfish. Also, are the blankets that go over the exhaust manifold necessary?

If the manifolds are similar to those on 8V71's, and I think they are, they should be water cooled. You don't insulate those. If you buy the blankets from outside the tri-State area, NY, NJ and CT you may save the sales Tax but pay for the Freight. It's your money.

Exhaust manifolds are water-cooled (fresh water at that, which is good) BUT the hotpipes connecting them to the turbo are not, and require blankets on most Detroits.

Some people have long narrow blankets made for the dry section of the exhaust manifolds, between the head and manifold. I think the main reason is asthetics. I never bother with them. It is a matter of preferance and I like to shoot the the sections with a IR gun, which is easier without the cover.

You can shoot the sections on an 8V71 (and the 671s, etc) with an IR gun and get good results.

The 6v92 manifolds give inconsistent results, unfortunately. There just isn't enough "meat" to get a good reading (that is not water-cooled)

yea I know about the 6V92 manifolds the question was about a 12V 71.
