Trying to answer a question for my son (and myself... :))

We have several tugs that stay permanatly at our small port in Morehead, and each is adorned with a large letter of the aphabet (one has an M, e.g) that isn't related to the boat name...

They are very well maintained, and just curious as to the meaning of the letter?

Yachtsmanbill might be the better guy to answer this, but here goes. Are you referring to the stack mark? A letter on the stack usually indicates the name of the towing company. A white M on a black stack is Moran Towing. Large ships have stack marks too, but usually they use colors instead of letters.

Thats the whole deal Scrod... ROEN steamship company in Sturgeon Bay has a BIG "R" with clear light bulbs that light up when the skipper blows the Leslie TYPHON horns. Is that retro or what?? This is the WINDOC (sp?) that crashed the bridge on the Trent-Severn waterway a few years ago. The bridge tender lowered the bridge a bit early. The ship blocked the TS for a week and was called a total loss after the ensuing fire took out the engine room and aft house! ws

Many thanks guys...some of the tugs are smallish, and have the letter attached to the pilot house...

it's probably McAllister Towing and Transportation.

MORAN is the "BIGGY" tugboat company here.... Know they are all over the East coast.

And they are famous around these parts for the amount of wake they love to put out...
