  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
46' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1974 - 1981)
Up to this year I've never run my 46 with 8/71s rpms up over 1800 but since my last discussion on this forum I've been cruising at 2000 and the boat runs great between 20 and 22 mph. I was able to get the RPMs user 2300 for a test but this weekend I axidently popped the starbord trans out of gear at 2000 rpm and noticed it only went up to about 2100 before I Droped the throttles down. Ever since then I can't seem to get the engine over 1950. I changed the primary and secondary fuel filters and no change. Any ideas?

Could you clarify your situation?? I can't quite understand your observations.

Two generic comments:

What does the stbd engine turn up now at WOT in neutral??

Have you checked your throttle cable controls at helm(s) and engine to be sure they are snug?? Sometimes an end can pop loose if a bolt works loose.

My guess is a dirty bottom and running gear... Simple as it seems LOL

To clarify - are you saying that it went to 2100 and then, immediately afterward, when you want back up to full throttle it would only get to 1950. Or are you saying that some weeks/months ago it went to 2100 and now will only manage 1950? If the latter, I agree it's likely to be barnacles/fouling on the running gear/bottom.

Popping the engine out of gear doesn't hurt anything at all - that's essentially a no-load test which, even though done accidentally, is a standard maint check.

Thanks guys just to clarify my message. It used to go up to 2200. Now only goes up to 1950 After it popped out. Bottom is clean, boat just went in water 3 weeks ago.changed both filters on engine after this happened. Thanks

Have you tried Viagra? LMAO
sorry I couldnt help myself The stiffs will be mad at me again.
3 weeks is plenty of time to grow barnacles. A couple on the wheels can easy knock off the rpm your talking about. MikeP had a recent post on the same issue. Grab a mask and scraper before you start tearing the engines apart.

I suppose you could have a governor problem as it had to react pretty fast from loaded to unloaded.

Are you certain your tach is working properly?
Will
