Hatteras Model
53' CONVERTIBLE (1969 - 1980)
According to the specs on Yachtworld this 2008 has triple 1800hp cats! I did not know that Hatteras even ventured to build something like this. I wonder what the fuel burn at cruise on this would be? That said if you can afford a new 77' hatt fuel is not a concern.

Builder: Hatteras
LOA: 77'
Engine(s): TR Cat C-32A Engine(s) HP: 1800 bhp

Hey Chris... two words come to mind when looking at this...
PEANUT ENVY. I gotta say that if I had that kind of dough, I would buy a multitude of older tubs (subs!) instead... epitomy of clorox styling.
Lets see, TR 1800 Cats, a sawzall and a bunch-o-barrels of resin and we could re-do a "louverjob" like 6X6 is looking at. WHEW !!! ws

I gotta agree Bill I wouldn't have it either, although it is a convertible and the style of the new ones are still acceptable. I just want to see a picture of the engine room to see what they did with the center engine shaft, right down the center of the keel?

I knew they built trips on the really big Hatt motoryachts, but I never saw a convertible that way. I'd just like to see how they squeezed that third engine into that ER. I've been on a 77 and it was none too spacious with twins. That third engine has to be staggered, but I don't remember there being enough room in the ER even for that.

i smell a typo... never heard of a straight shaft triple inboard sportfish.

triple IPS are the new thing in the fast MY market, but not triple straight shafts...

they pushed the port & stbd engines outboard and forward. You have to remember that standard engines for this boat are 2400 hp, so three 1800 hp engines really fit quite well the third engine was on center line just aft of the center of the two other engines. fuel at curze was less than the two 2400 hp. you can also troll on one engine to save fuel when fishing and can run the boat on two engines once you are up on plane. this boat is not for the weak hearted when it comes to fuel. I know that the two 2400 hp engines at wide open burn 130 gals each per hour. 95 ghp at cruze.

Norseman made a few larger s/f the center shaft came out thru the keel.

I'm surprised that the center engine isn't staggered ahead of the others like on a go-fast. I assume there isn't enough length in the ER to allow that as it would have to be easier than pushing the other two outboard.

I'm not familiar with 1800hp cats, are they 16clys?

They are 32 liter V12s.

Hatteras 45 you are correct. Norseman -- actually a man who worked for them (Padilla) built a 52' SF -- I think a 1972 with triple 903 Cummins. "Sea Note" based out of Davis Harbor Eleuthera. Owner of Norseman had a 62Stapleton hull, finished by his yard, also with triple Cummins. Fish side by side at San Salvador mid 80's.

Is this an unsold new boat? It is a 2008 and for sale by a Hatteras Yachts dealer who is one of the biggest one....what are they asking for it? It's a monster.

Maybe they should have built a 77' with two engines and another one with one engine.....:)

It is not anything new. Chris Craft built triple screw motoryachts in the 50's.

I love the idea of a triple engine boat. But I would use a much smaller engine for the center. That way you can cruise at efficient displacement speeds on the center. On a boat of that size, I would think a center engine of 300ish hp would be ideal for that. On a baot like mine, I'd love a center line 150hp engine for slow trawler-like cruising, and have the twin big engines for going fast.

I am not sure what this boat sells for, 4-5mil+? I would think if you could afford that the last thing you probably worry about is the fuel burn, cost of maintenance etc etc.... I was just day dreaming when I saw it

Many years ago, in the 80s, Lydia Yachts (Stuart,FL) built a large (for the time) sportfishing boat called "That's My Hon". She had two gas turbines, I think, and a set of 8v92TAs, if I recall right. I think the turbines were for getting out there, and the diesels were for trolling/low speed maneuvering etc. And I think she got passed around from one owner to the next, the turbines got taken out, etc etc. I don't know if she is still around. Sort of the same idea. Fuel was a lot cheaper then, and you could do stuff like that.

I think a little trolling diesel is a great idea. But I think you might be able to get close these days with electronically controlled engines, which will run at lower speeds than mechanically injected ones.

Interesting!!!

In 2007 along with members of the Cape Fear Power Squadron I did a tour of the Hatters plant in New Bern. That boat was "work in progress" in one of the plants and the diesels were already in place. It was, of course, a custom order job.
