Just a little note regarding our holiday trip this August. We left Bowmanville on Aug 10, and proceeded to Toronto, the Welland Canal, Tonawanda, Oswego via the Erie Canal, across the lake to Picton Penninsula, and home after stopping at Coburg Ontario. Total distance was 524 miles. We used 312 gal. of diesel fuel, travelling at speeds ranging from 7.5 knots (1400 rps) up to 13.5 knots (2350 rpm). We cruised the Erie Canal at 8.3 knots on average.
The most interesting sight on this trip occurred in a little town called Newark NY, which is just east of Rochester. The dockmaster and his wife like to feed the fish. We watched as huge monster carp (35-45 lb) raised their heads out of the water to be petted by the dockmaster's wife. After this ritual petting, the each recieved a slice of bread. A little like watching some deep sea monster rise from the ocean depths.
Total travel time was just under 3.5 weeks. Totally enjoyable, but not long enough. Mechanical problems: new starter for port engine, 1 broken tach cable, and some problems with one of the toilets.
