After my repower I noticed my boat had a slight list to the port and on occasion shifted from port to stbd. I looked all over the boat for water where it should not be, ect ect but found no clues about why it does this until I worked my way through the Bennett Trim tab system...which has been on the boat since new in 1985 according to the records. I called bennett for some info...I thought it was bleed back from one of the solenoids...meaning after I set the tabs the solenoid was not holding the the plunger in place by completely closing. I never noticed this with the 454's because I never got close to the speeds I have now.
Anyhow, 25+ years later Bennett sent me a free rebuild kit for the solenoids. I rebuilt them and found that the solenoid was worn out...was not strong enough to actuate properly so I put in two new solenoids.
Wow, what a difference! No listing and she took the 4-5's like they weren't even there! My only thing with the boat now is I think I may have to adjust the props at the end of the season. Maybe a little tip cup to get a few more rpms. Maybe its just my lack of knowledge but I don't like to have to rely on the tabs to get on plane in a quicker fashion with a full tank of fuel ect. I'd like to know that she performs well without the tabs and even better with them. Trimmed with a full tank during the seatrial we made 2850rpms wot. I think another 50rpms may help me out with the weight. What do you guys think? She's not overloaded because I don't see any smoke. Once trimmed and on plane she hits about 23-25kts at 2200 rpms (cruise). I'm just thinking about some adjustment to get her arse end up quicked even without tabs. Having another 50 rpms would give me a better safety margin too.
