  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
Went out yesterday & broke the boat! I have a pin hole leak in the thing I'll call a pump. From the back of the motor it is on the lower left side of the trans . it has one line going to the heat exchanger. there is a oil sending unit just above the leak.
I have the 671N & not sure what trans I'm looking at. the fluid leaking seems like oil , not red ?
the leak is on the back plate about the size of a # 6 screw .

I used a rag & duck tape to get back to the dock , it put a shit load of oil in the forward bilge, got the oil sucked up & I'm getting ready to start digging my way to the bolts. I'm sure they will break off to make this job more enjoyable. Nothing like retapping holes when your laying in the bilge.

Any ideas on the pump?

You probably have Twin Disc or Allison gears. I agree with Bob that breaking a casting is less likely than a screw backing out. Both of those units use motor oil as the working fluid. It should not be black, as he pointed out, if the gear oil is black a rear mail seal may be bad.

mine has Capitols:cool:

We have Twin Disc MG 506 gear boxes , It uses SAE 40 HD oil for fluid. I did a no no & used a quart of dex 3 to get the boat in. now I have to pump out all the oil & flush out the gear box.
I found the pump at dieselpro for 580.00 & the sending units were 85.00 for both motors. Thing is where the bolts are suppose to be their not. they just rusted away over time. I cleaned them up & painted them over the summer so this was not really a big surprise. The casting plate rusted away Old Salty gave the a life expectancy of 6 mo to 5 years, Fix them when the fail.
The oil coming out of the leak is clear. Dose anyone know how much oil is in these units ? It has all the other fluid amounts on the build sheet except that one. Go figure.

The extra pump I bought just because Jim bought one is now going to come in handy to get the oil out.
Or do I remove the line going to the HE & let it pump it's self out ? I just didn't want to mix the dex 3 any more than then I have to.

There should be a plate on the transmission that states the amount of fluid needed. My 1979 MG506 says 1.2 gal. Keep in mind that this is the amount to fill the transmission and does not include the fluid lines.
If you don't have a manual for the units send me an email and I'll send you the manual: eze2bme@aol.com and tag HATTERAS.

The MG 506 uses 1 gallon and 1qt of SAE 40 motor oil.

Wondering if I should change the other gear box oil as well ? How often is it recommended to change out the gear box oil ? This is still all new to me. Seems like there is always more to learn with These boats.......

Hope the 300 hours I was told is correct??!!
