  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
41' DOUBLE CABIN (1962 - 1965)
The other day I took my boat over to the fuel dock. When I put the boat into reverse, the prop shaft started to vibrate quite significantly. When I took the boat out for a test run, the boat ran beautifully in forward with no vibration at all, up to 2000 rpm. When put back into reverse, vibration returned.

Forward...no vibration. Reverse... vibration.

My mechanic cannot identify the problem. Any thoughts? Tranny fluid is topped up. Pressure is good. Boat runs great otherwise.

Something wrapped on the shaft ?

Could be a cutlass bearing. It happened to be a few seasons back. Only reverse showed signs of vibration in forward it would run smooth.

You could be right about this. My rear cutllass bearing is worn. We were going to replace it in the fall.
