Hi All,

This was an end of last year development that at this point is more of an annoyance than any else but I want it fixed before we launch this spring.

When I move the starboard transmission lever from say forward to reverse it doesn't have that momentary stop point inbetween anymore. It does disengage, but I know that from the position of the lever, the sound of the engine and that the prop stops moving.

We're thinking the transmission is ok and that it's in the controls themselves at the helm, any thoughts.

What controls do you have? What gears do you have?

If you have the original Morse controls and Allison M20 gears, it depends on how your controls are set up. The Morse controls can be either single cable or double cable and they do have a detent setup. The detent is a ball bearing, a spring and a set screw that goes down into the center threaded hole in the top of the control frame (in between the two threaded holes that hold the cover on. The rocker arm has a dip in the center so the ball will act as a detent at the neutral stop. If yours uses the detent, either your spring is weak or broken, or you can grease it and screw the set screw down until there is enough spring pressure to make your detent feel right.

HOWEVER, since the Allison M20 gears have a "feel" in neutral, almost like a detent, my original Morse dual controls are set up with the standard single push-pull cable and no detent. It is therefore extremely simple and I can feel neutral and see the lever at straight up, so I really don't need them.

Help - Transmission lever doesn't pause in neutral

Hi All,

I thought I would re-float this thread since we’re just now getting back to it and it's still a problem. I was hoping folks might have some more ideas.

This started all of a sudden last season. It's only the stbd transmission. It was working fine, you felt it stop at neutral before pulling it down to reverse (or forward to drive).

Now it does go into neutral buty you have to move it a bit back and forth to find the spot. As my father would have said "jiggle it" (old Navy terminology).

I followed up on the post above about the missing detent in the shift mechanism. I did find that was missing, but appartently it's always been missing and the port side shift mechanism is missing it also but it still has a hard pause in neutral.

I’m hoping it's not a transmission level issue….

Any ideas.

We have Capitol gears and there is a spring and ball detent (similar to the one in Morse Controls described in a previous reply) in the little shift lever on the transmission itself. I've seen these detents in shift levers for other transmissions as well.
